  • [01] PRESIDENT - HOUSE PRESIDENT - MEETING

Cyprus House and DIKO party President Marios Karoyan has submitted to the President of the Republic thoughts and proposals with a view to strengthen the Greek Cypriot negotiating position as regards the Cyprus problem and create the circumstances so as the basis of the Greek Cypriot sides positions to enjoy a bigger acceptance on behalf of the international community.

Speaking after a meeting with President Demetris Christofias, during which he was briefed on the latest developments of the Cyprus efforts and the meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, DIKO President noted that there are positive elements in the joint statement, issued after that meeting, adding there are also some points which are described as a constructive ambiguity causing reasonable concerns.

The biggest danger there is, according to the House President, for the Turkish side, which all this period gave us samples of a fruitless, implacable policy to utilize these ambiguities to promote its own strategic interests with the assistance of the powerful states.

[02] GREEK MILITARY SCHOOL - CYPRUS

A delegation from the Greek Military School of Nursing is on a visit to Cyprus until May 30, as part of its training programme.

According to an official announcement, issued by the Ministry of Defence, School representatives will hold tomorrow a series of meetings.

In the morning they will meet the President of the House of Representatives Marios Karoyan, the Greek Ambassador Demetris Rallis and later on the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II.

    [03] STUDENTS - FINAL EXAMS

A total of 9,774 students across the island began their final exams on Monday morning with Modern Greek, a compulsory subject for all in order to graduate and gain access to all levels.

According to the Ministry of Education and Culture, this year`s examinations provide facilities for about 225 persons with special needs, such as an extension to the exam time, simplification of the essay, use of a computer with spell check features and exemption from the listening and comprehension of texts in foreign languages.

The last exams will be held on June 14 and it is estimated that the results will be announced in time for the schools to issue graduating certificates by the end of June.

There are 30 courses for lyceum and technical school students and a further 80 topics for technical school students.
