  • [01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - JOINT STATEMENT

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have reaffirmed their commitment to a bizonal bicommunal federation.

A joint statement, read out to the media by the UN Secretary Generals Special Representative to Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun, at whose residence the leaders of the two communities met, says that ``the leaders today had genuine and fruitful discussions, and reviewed the results achieved pursuant to the 21st March agreement.``

``They reaffirmed their commitment for a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as defined by relevant Security Council resolutions. This partnership will have a federal government with a single international personality, as well as a Turkish Cypriot constituent state and a Greek Cypriot constituent state which will be of equal status,`` it notes.

The statement adds that ``they instructed their representatives to examine, within 15 days, the results of the technical committees.``

``The representatives will consider civilian and military confidence building measures. They will pursue the opening of Limnitis - Yesilirmak and other crossing points,`` the statement says.

It concludes that ``the leaders decided to come together again in the second half of June to make a new assessment.``

The two leaders met for the second time in the past couple of months in an effort to make headway towards the resumption of substantive negotiations, leading to a political settlement that will reunite Cyprus, divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Since their agreement in March, seven technical committees and six working groups, comprising experts from both communities, have been meeting to discuss various aspects of the Cyprus question, including governance, security, economy, health and EU matters, property and territory.

    [02] HOUSE PRESIDENT - STRASBOURG - CONFERENCE

House President Marios Karoyan has expressed the strong commitment and the good will of the Greek Cypriot side to work for a negotiated settlement, that will reunite Cyprus.

This commitment should not be misinterpreted as tolerance to misguided attempts to deviate from the agreed framework of establishing a bi-communal and bi-zonal federal Cyprus, with a single sovereignty, international personality and citizenship, Karoyan stressed in his address to the European Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, in Strasbourg.

He said the solution must be based on the High Level Agreements of 1977 and 1979, international law, the pertinent UN resolutions and the principles upon which the European Union and the Council of Europe are founded.

``A solution which will safeguard fundamental human rights and freedoms for all the people of Cyprus,`` he added.
