  • [01] SPOKESMAN - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities do not speak the same language so far at the ongoing discussions, to help resolve the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou believes.

That is why, he explained, President Demetris Christofias has asked to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to review progress at the bicommunal teams of experts and see how the two communities can overcome problems.

We are not saying there is no progress in every single topic under discussion. In fact, I believe in certain issues, there is progress. However the most important thing is the work of the working groups - which deal with core issues such as governance, territory, property, Turkish settlers - if we want to prepare the ground for a solution, he told the UN Association of foreign correspondents at UN headquarters in New York.

Unfortunately, he pointed out, on these core issues we do not speak the same language, something we must do if we are to bridge the differences and move on to the next phase of this process, namely fully-fledged negotiations between the leaders of the two communities.

He expressed hope that the Christofias and Talat meeting on Friday will help overcome existing obstacles to pave the road for negotiations.

The Spokesman said that Turkeys National Security Council positions about two states in Cyprus, which are repeated by Talat, are not conducive to progress at the talks.

    [02] STEPHANOU - UN - CYPRUS

Cypriot Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus issue with the UN Under-Secretary General Lynn Pascoe.

In his statements, the Government Spokesman said that the discussion with the high ranking UN official focused on the current phase of the Cyprus problem and the process which is underway at the level of Working Groups and Technical Committees, in view of the meeting between Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, on Friday.

UN sources have said the Stephanou-Pascoe meeting focused on the status of the current process at the level of the Groups and the Committees, aimed at preparing the ground for direct negotiations, and on the importance of Fridays meeting.

    [03] WEIS - CYPRUS

Its more than a pity that this capital, Nicosia, is still divided, Alexander Weis, European Defence Agency Chief Executive, has said today after he visited the Ledra Street crossing point.

Weis is paying a visit to Cyprus, to talk with the government of the Republic of Cyprus. This morning he had a meeting with the Cypriot Minister of Defence, Costas Papacostas.

We have discussed subjects of mutual interest. Next Monday we will have a steering Board meeting in Brussels and we talk about these activities in particular, he said.
