  • [01] IACOVOU - CYPRUS TALKS

UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus and Head of UNFICYP, Taye-Brook Zerihoun, who arrives on the island next week, will meet Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and Turkish Cypriot leaders advisor Ozdil Nami as soon as possible.

Zerihoun will be filled on the current situation and the progress at technical committees and working groups bicommunal teams of experts engaged in discussions on the Cyprus issue - by Acting Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus Elizabeth Spehar who leaves for New York Wednesday.

Spehar, Iacovou and Nami met Tuesday, made a general evaluation of the progress at committees and groups and exchanged views about how the procedure can yield the best results.

Some problems were noted and they discussed ways on how they can be overcome, said Iacovou.

Generally speaking, working groups and technical committees are doing pivotal work, but this does not mean that there is an agreement, Iacovou added, pointing out that the aim of the committees and the groups is not to negotiate but to exchange views over a wide range of subjects.

The Presidential Commissioner declined to comment on progress in the discussions of the groups and the committees, saying there is confidentiality about the details of their work.

What I can say is that in the committees there is a good climate. I think we have a lot of time ahead of us, he noted.

Replying to another question, Iacovou said that statements made lately by Turkish and Turkish Cypriot officials cause concern.

He also referred to tomorrows social encounter between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, who will attend a reception hosted by the Slovak embassy for Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties.

In March 2008, President Christofias and Talat, during a meeting in the presence of the UN, agreed to set up working groups and technical committees to deal with various aspects of the Cyprus problem with a view to prepare the ground for substantive negotiations between the two leaders.

    [02] TAXIDI 2008 - EXHIBITION

Around 15,000 people are expected to visit this years travel exhibition TAXIDI 2008, which will take place between 9th - 11th of May 2008 at the Cyprus International State Fair Authority grounds, in Nicosia. Interested visitors will receive information about this years summer holiday packages by 66 exhibitors, who will participate in the fair, including travel agents, airlines, Cypriot and foreign hotel chains, and others. Many foreign countries participate with their own pavilions in the exhibition, including Greece, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Malta, Hungary and Poland, while Slovakia is this years country of honor.

The exhibition is organised by the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA). Chairman of ACTA Akis Kelepeshis said that the Association aspires to turn the travel exhibition into a regional travel event. He also gave statistical data regarding travels of Cypriots abroad.

Greece remains the top travel destination for Cypriots. Last year, 438,388 trips were recorded for Greece, among them 293,075 for holidays. In total, in 2007 1,080,512 trips were organised abroad, 712,612 of which for holidays.

    [03] LARNACA MARINA - PROJECT

Infrastructure work at Larnaca port and its marina, to improve facilities, will begin by the end of 2009 or by early 2010, Alekos Michaelides, Director of Public Works Department, has announced. Speaking before the House Communications Committee, Michaelides said the Department is currently evaluating three dossiers, submitted by three groups of companies which are interested in putting forward tenders for the project. We hope that by the end of May, the Ministry of Communications and Works will decide on the contractor of its choice, he added.

The companies were invited to submit their tenders for the project in November 2006, said Michaelides, and added: The contract with the successful company will be for a period of 35 years while the contract for the Larnaca marina development project is for three years, from the day it is signed.

Infrastructure work at the port, he noted, should finish six years after the signing of the contract with the successful bidder. The project will be assigned on the basis of BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer), he said. Zacharias Koulias, Chairman of the House Committee, asked that all relevant documentation on the project be submitted to the Committee for consideration.

    [04] EUROPEAN DANCE FESTIVAL

Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou has announced here the launch of the 11th European Dance Festival, one of the most successful annual events for the lovers of dance, which attracts the widespread interest of dance groups, dancers and choreographers from all over Europe. This year, fifteen dance groups from fifteen European countries, including Cyprus, present their work during this truly European celebration of dance.

Parallel to the dance performances there will be a series of supporting workshops, giving the opportunity to up-coming dancers and choreographers to assimilate absorb and appreciate the current trends in European dance development. Speaking at a press conference on the 11th European Dance Festival, Demetriou said Cyprus for seven consecutive weeks organises and hosts this important cultural event, an initiative of the Ministry of Education and Culture dating back to 1997, which continues to be under the auspices of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus.

Since its establishment, he said, the Festival has developed into one of the most successful institutions regarding both the attraction of audiences and the presentation of quality, thus playing a catalytic role in the advancement and development of dance in Cyprus. The aim and objective of this initiative of the Ministry of Education and Culture, he added, is the construction of bridges of communication with the other countries members of the European Union, bridges that can initiate a dialogue with other countries and civilisations in an effort to confront the big challenges of the new country.
