  • [01] SPOKESMAN - TURKISH CYPRIOTS

Restrictive measures imposed by the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime are proof of its suppression on the Turkish Cypriots, Government Spokesman Vasilis Palmas has said, adding that such moves show where the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots emanates.

The spokesman was commenting on press reports that the regime is introducing measures to curb shopping by the Turkish Cypriots in the southern government controlled part of Cyprus.

I believe this proves where oppression comes from and how the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots from the international community emanates, Palmas said.

The government, he pointed out, has on various occasions in the past said that the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots is the direct result of policies imposed by the illegal regime.

This isolation is exclusively due to the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, he stressed.

The regime, recognized only by Turkey whose troops occupy since 1974 Cyprus northern part, has maintained over the past few years that the government of the Republic is raising obstacles in the way of the Turkish Cypriots and prevents them from joining the international community.

The government points out that isolation as a notion is often applied by the regime to consolidate its status and assist its designs to establish two states on the island.

The Turkish Cypriot media reported also the strict control the regime is exercising at crossing points to and from the occupied areas, because of foot and mouth disease outbreak in the government controlled areas and asks why the regime does not confiscate infected money which thousands of Turkish Cypriots, working in the southern part of the country, bring home.

[02] FM - VISIT TO ISRAEL

Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Markoulli will pay Israel a three day working visit, 3 - 5 December 2007. An official press release says that Markoulli will be received by President of Israel Shimon Peres and hold a meeting with her Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni.

She will also meet head of the opposition party, Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as members of the Knesset Israel Cyprus friendship group.

During her meetings in Israel, the Cypriot Foreing Minister will discuss the Middle East issue, focusing on the meeting in Anapolis, the Cyprus question, bilateral relations, regional problems and matters concerning cooperation between both countries in international organisations, especially within the European Union. Markoulli will also be received by Patriarch of Jerusalem Theofilos the иии.

[03] CENTRAL BANK - BANK OF LEBANON

The Central Bank of Cyprus has granted banking business licence to Intercontinental Bank of Lebanon SAL of Lebanon, to carry on banking business in Cyprus through a branch. A Central Bank press release says that the branch of Intercontinental Bank of Lebanon SAL in Cyprus will be subject to the primary supervision and inspection of the Banking Control Commission of Lebanon, as well as to the supervision and inspection of the Central Bank of Cyprus.

For this reason, the two supervisory authorities have already signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of banking supervision, facilitating the prudential supervision and inspection of credit institutions with a cross-border establishment in the two countries. ``Intercontinental Bank of Lebanon SALs decision to establish a branch in Cyprus is another indication of our countrys success in attracting international credit institutions as a result of Cyprus international recognition as a reputable regional banking and financial centre``, the Cyprus CB notes.

At present, eight other Lebanese banks are operating in Cyprus in the form of a branch, while the total number of foreign banks operating in Cyprus is currently 34 from 14 different countries (Austria, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Ireland, Jersey, Jordan, Latvia, Lebanon, Romania, Russia, Tanzania, Ukraine and the United Kingdom), which operate in Cyprus either in the form of a subsidiary bank or branch.
