[01] PAPADOPOULOS - CYPRUS PROBLEMPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos said the Government did not have any official proposal for a new initiative for a Cyprus settlement after the presidential elections, noting that there was however information regarding mobility on the matter.Speaking at Larnaca Airport on his return from Athens and asked about a new initiative on the Cyprus problem, President Papadopoulos said ``it is information, it is statements, press reports, and everyone is speaking about mobility.`` ``I am not aware of a specific initiative. There is nothing concrete,`` President Papadopoulos pointed out. Commenting on reactions by the Turkish occupation regime regarding the purchase of products by Turkish Cypriots in the government-controlled areas of the Republic, President Papadopoulos said the Greek Cypriot side permitted free trade, while the occupation regime imposed restrictions. ``The economic activity between the two communities is totally free from our side. If there are any restrictions there are imposed by the occupation regime for its own reasons and it would be good for those speaking about free trade to know that trade is not one-way. It involves both sides and not one side forbidding it and us leaving it free,`` he said. [02] SARRIS - ECONOMYThe growth rate of the Cypriot economy, due to external factors, is expected to be maintained in 2008 within the levels of the past few years, that is around 4%, while employment will continue to increase and unemployment decrease to 3.9%, according to Cypriot Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris, who noted that the creation of new jobs would continue due to the improvement of the business environment and the confidence created by the adoption of the Euro on 1 January 2008.Speaking before the plenary of the House of Representatives, which discussed the state budget for 2008, Sarris said the inflation rate would be around 2.5% as a result of the high prices of fuel. Furthermore, the public surplus is estimated to be around 0.5% of GDP. The decrease in the surplus compared to 2007 is due to the temporary nature of part of income for 2007, recent tax reductions, and the full implementation of social cohesion measures. [03] ECHR - CASESTwo cases against Turkey, relating to human rights violations in Cyprus, are set to be settled in the coming weeks, as the European Court of Human Rights issues its final verdict on them.Next week the Third Section of the Court will deal with damages to be paid by Turkey to a Greek Cypriot, whose property lies in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus, and it will also rule on whether to strike out another similar case, following a deal between a Greek Cypriot and a self-styled Turkish Cypriot compensation commission. The Court plenary is likely to issue its judgment on both cases (Demades and Tymvios) early next year. Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
