  • [01] MFA - OCCUPATION

The ongoing Turkish occupation of part of Cyprus and the continuous efforts by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership to upgrade the secessionist entity, illegally declared in 1983, remain the most serious obstacles to efforts towards a solution and the reunification of the country, Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said here Wednesday.

The Cypriot MFA issued a statement to mark the 24th anniversary since the illegal declaration of the secessionist entity in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey.

Recalling that the international community, through the UN Security Council resolutions 541(1983) and 550(1984) condemned Turkeys unilateral act as legally invalid and called for its immediate withdrawal, the Cypriot MFA noted that ``despite the persistent efforts by Ankara and its subordinate local administration in the occupied areas, no country, other than the occupying power, recognizes this illegal entity, in full compliance with the binding resolutions of the Security Council.``

``The ongoing Turkish occupation since 1974 and the continuous efforts by Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership to upgrade the secessionist entity, in violation of the will of the international community, remain the most serious obstacles to the efforts for finding a solution to the problem and for the reunification of Cyprus``, the MFA added.

    [02] SIOUFAS - CYPRUS

President of the Greek Parliament Dimitris Sioufas reiterated here today Greek support to a viable Cyprus settlement, based on UN Resolutions and European Union principles and values.

Sioufas wrapped up his visit to Cyprus this evening, the first official visit abroad as President of the Greek Parliament, with a meeting with the Cypriot Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Markoulli, noting that he chose Cyprus for substantive as well as symbolic reasons.

Markoulli said that Cyprus is going through a critical phase because of Turkey`s efforts to promote a divisive solution and the recognition of the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus.

    [03] CULLING - FMD

The Veterinary Services began today the culling of animals at two more local farms, which tested positive for foot and mouth disease (FMD), as part of efforts to eliminate the virus and its destructive consequences for the islands farming sector and the economy.

Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Fotis Fotiou stressed today that the EU decision on the matter is that wherever contaminated animals are identified and these are confirmed, the entire flock must be culled.

Responding to questions regarding the farms where culling started today, Fotiou said that the Director of the EU Veterinary Services have said in a letter that there must be no delay in culling affected animals.

According to the Veterinary Services, so far tests were carried out on 4084 samples from 152 farms and culling took place at four farms, in a 3 km radius quarantine area around the village of Dromolaxia, on the southeast.

    [04] G/C - T/C PARTIES

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties have called on the leaders of the two communities ``to take decisive action towards opening the Ledra Street checkpoint on the same terms as the other checkpoints were opened.``

The leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot parties, who discussed the issue ``Opening of the Ledra Street checkpoint as an Enhancer of Political and Economic Rapprochement,`` during their regular meeting, under the auspices of the Slovak embassy to Cyprus, also expressed their wish to visit the Nicosia buffer zone and both sides of Ledra Street.

``They call upon the leaders of the two communities to take decisive action towards opening the Ledra Street checkpoint on the same terms as the other checkpoints were opened, as a pathway of communication and economic growth in an area of common identity, and as a symbolic and substantial vehicle towards expediting the ultimate aim of uniting their country,`` a joint communique issued after the meeting said.

The next regular meeting of leaders and representatives of the political parties will be held on the 12 December.
