  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - BRITISH-TURKISH ACCORD

Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias has said that Cyprus must take initiatives and maintain a close relationship with Britain, with a view to change the document of strategic partnership signed between the Prime Ministers of Britain and Turkey.

He also said that Britain adopts a policy aiming to upgrade the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in Cyprus occupied areas and added ``we must be vigilant and exercise preventive diplomacy.

In statements at Larnaca airport, before leaving for an official visit to the Czech Republic, Christofias said that he had undertaken an initiative to protest and take action, adding that "we have to prevent events and take initiatives.

Replying to questions, Christofias said that this is not the first time that Britain has created very serious problems for the Republic of Cyprus, adding that Britains role has never been in favour of Cyprus.

Prime ministers of Britain and Turkey signed Tuesday a strategic partnership agreement which commits Britain and Turkey to take forward work on ending what the Turkish Cypriots call isolation and to encourage others in the international community to join them in their efforts.

In the document, London and Ankara say they will work within the UN, the EU and bilaterally to promote direct commercial, economic, political and cultural contacts between the UK, the EU and the Turkish Cypriots.

They will also provide continued help for TRNC authorities/universities in their attempts to engage with the Bologna process and will uphold the right of representation of the Turkish Cypriots in the European Parliament.

    [02] EUROPEAN COMMISSION - ``TRNC``

EU member states do not recognize the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus the European Commission has said.

The Commission was replying to a question submitted by Cypriot MEP Yiannakis Matsis (EPP) as regards the position outlined by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, while paying an illegal visit to Cyprus occupied areas, that there are two states in Cyprus.

According to a press release issued by Matsis office, the Commission said in its response that except from the Sovereign British Bases Area, all the other territories of the island belong to the Republic of Cyprus.

It added that the areas on which the Republic of Cyprus exercises effective control and those on which its does not are designated on the basis of Protocol 10 of the 2003 Accession Treaty.
