[01] EUROPEAN COMMISSION - ``TRNC``EU member states do not recognize the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus the European Commission has said.The Commission was replying to a question submitted by Cypriot MEP Yiannakis Matsis (EPP) as regards the position outlined by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, while paying an illegal visit to Cyprus occupied areas, that there are two states in Cyprus. According to a press release issued by Matsis office, the Commission said in its response that except from the Sovereign British Bases Area, all the other territories of the island belong to the Republic of Cyprus. It added that the areas on which the Republic of Cyprus exercises effective control and those on which its does not are designated on the basis of Protocol 10 of the 2003 Accession Treaty. Member states, the Commission stressed, do not recognize the so called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Commission stressed the need and its commitment for the reiteration of talks under the UN for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question the soonest possible. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. The Republic of Cyprus joined the EU on May 1, 2004. [02] COMMONWEALTH SG - CYPRUS VISITCommonwealth Secretary-General Donald McKinnon will visit Cyprus, ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Uganda from 23 to 25 November 2007.The summit will bring together leaders from a quarter of the worlds nations, representing one-third of the worlds population. [03] CYPRUS - BRITAIN - STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH TURKEYThe strategic partnership agreement signed between Britain and Turkey will leave its marks on the Cypriot-British relations, Cyprus High Commissioner in London George Iacovou has said.In statements to London Greek Radio (LGR), Iacovou said that Britain had not informed beforehand the Cyprus Government on this agreement. Furthermore he recalled that Britain and Cyprus had agreed in 2005 on a memorandum of understanding with a view to improve relations between the two countries. Iacovou said that this action on the part of Britain, to fully align itself with the Turkish positions and pursuits, will of course leave its marks on the Cypriot-British relations. [04] CYPRUS - GREECE - RECONSTRUCTION OF ARTEMIDAAround mid December the Government of Cyprus will assign the project of the reconstruction of the village of Artemida in Peloponnesus which was razed by the disastrous forest fires, after the opening of bids.This was stated by the Interior Minister Christos Patsalides, after a meeting at the Presidential Palace. He added that the cost of rebuilding of the Greek village, is estimated to reach 14.5 million euro. Our goal is to move on with the work, which concerns the rebuilding or the reconstruction of houses in the area, as soon as possible and with view to do a high quality work, Patsalides said.
