[01] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT NEW PROPOSAL JULY 8 ACCORDCyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, with eight points for the immediate implementation of the July 8 Agreement and other issues that concern the Cyprus problem, announced Government Spokesman Vasilis Palmas.In a statement, the Spokesman said that during his meeting with the Secretary General on 23 September 2007 in New York, Ban Ki-Moon appealed to the President for the immediate implementation of the July 8 agreement. In response to the SGs appeal, and in view of the meeting of the Turkish Cypriot leader (Mehmet Ali Talat) with the SG in New York today, the President sent a letter yesterday to the UN SG, submitting a proposal with eight points for the immediate implementation of the July 8 Agreed Procedure and other issues that concern the Cyprus problem, Palmas said. The President, said Palmas, expresses the wish that this initiative will be dealt in a positive manner by the Turkish side and that the Turkish Cypriot leadership will cooperate to implement, without any delay, the Agreed Procedure so we can soon be led, after negotiations, to an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem. When invited to say which are the eight points, the Spokesman did not want to elaborate, adding the President will make statements on his proposal on Wednesday before his departure to Lisbon to attend the EU informal summit. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of UN official Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. [02] CHURCH OF CYPRUS BRUSSELS OFFICEArchbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew have agreed to the opening of a Church of Cyprus office in Brussels.The primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus and Patriarch Bartholomew met in Georgia, where they participated in the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of Patriarch Elias assumption of duties and the 1,400 years since the establishment of the ancient monastery of the Holy Cross. Archbishop Chrysostomos returned to Cyprus via Paris where he had several meetings with religious and state officials. [03] CYPRUS DENMARK EDUCATIONThe Education Ministers of Cyprus and Denmark agreed on the further cooperation between the two countries within the EU as regards their educational systems.Akis Kleanthous and Berpel Haarder exchanged views on a process towards more autonomous schools and the improvement of the quality of the educational system.
