    Honorary President of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK Vassos Lyssarides will be flying to Damascus on October 20 as an envoy of President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, for talks regarding the illegal sea routes between Latakia, Syria, and the Turkish occupied port of Famagusta.

    ``If everything goes well, I will be in Damascus on October 20,`` Lyssarides said on Monday, after a meeting with President Papadopoulos.

    Lyssarides said he exchanged views with President Papadopoulos on various issues, especially in view of his trip to Damascus.

    ``These issues need careful handling and the common aim is to lift any negative consequences and to establish the traditionally friendly relations that existed and we believe still exist between Syria and Cyprus,`` Lyssarides noted.

    [02] MARKOULLIS - AUSTRIA

    Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis will discuss on Tuesday with her Austrian counterpart Ursula Plassnik European current issues, including the Cyprus problem, the situation in Kosovo and the Middle East peace process.

    During her visit to Vienna, Markoullis will give a speech at the Austrian Diplomatic Academy, followed by a special ceremony to sign a memorandum of cooperation between the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Academy on the future training of Cypriot diplomats.

    On Monday, Markoullis participated in the EU General Affairs Council, which took place in Luxembourg and focused on the Intergovernmental Conference for the EU Reform Treaty, on Iran, Iraq, the Western Balkans and the Greek initiative to tackle natural disasters.

    [03] CYPRUS - GREECE - POLICE

    Greek Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Sophoclis Sophocleous have initialed a Memorandum of Cooperation on Police issues.

    During a meeting they had on Monday, the two Ministers discussed cooperation between Greece and Cyprus on issues of public order and equality between women and men. The Memorandum will be signed in Nicosia in November.

    The agreement relating to the Memorandum exists since 1993, it was ratified in 1997 and has been in force since 1998.

    [04] BAGHDATIS - MADRID MASTERS

    Cypriot tennis player Marcos Baghdatis passed into the second round of the Madrid Masters Tournament on Monday, by beating Romanian Andrei Pavel, ranking 82nd, 2-1 set.

    Baghdatis won the first set with 6-3, lost the second by 4-6 and won the third with 6-1.

    In the second round, Baghdatis will be playing against Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 2nd in the world, who qualified without playing.
