  • [01] CYPRIOT FM MOSCOW

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas will be in Moscow for talks with the Russian government between 10 and 12 April.

According to an official press release, Lillikas will hold talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

He will also have a series of separate meetings with the Vice Chairman of the Russian Duma responsible for International Issues, as well as Vice Chairman of the Federations Council of the Senate.

The Cypriot Minister will give a lecture at the Institute of International Relations of the University of Moscow with the title International Law and Collectivity. The only source of peace and stability.

Lillikas, who will be accompanied in Moscow by a delegation of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, will also meet with representatives of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He will also inform representatives of major Russian companies on the exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon deposits in Cyprus exclusive economic zone.

    [02] SPOKESMAN - JULY 8 AGREEMENT

Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis reiterated the Greek Cypriot side`s adherence to the July 8th agreement, saying that for us and for the UN, this procedure constitutes the sole way leading to a mutually acceptable solution, through substantive negotiations.

The Spokesman was invited to comment on a letter by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat addressed to the UN Secretary General, containing the Turkish side`s positions on the current phase of the Cyprus problem and especially with regard to the July 8 agreement.

Any other solution to the Cyprus problem, which tends to change the agreed, is not only a retreat, but also a regression, because, instead of promoting the effort for a solution, it only promotes deadlocks and ineffectiveness, he said.

Pashiardis noted that the government of Cyprus is evaluating the positions of the Turkish Cypriot side as expressed in Talat`s letter, stressing that the Greek Cypriot side remains committed to the July 8 agreement.

We remain committed to the July agreement and the achievement of a functional and viable solution the soonest possible. This goal is neither promoted nor served with retreat from the agreed or with regression to dead-end roads, he pointed out.

    [03] CYPRUS - EUROZONE

Cypriot Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris said that the Ministry is continuing its efforts for the best possible transition of the Cypriot national currency (the Cyprus pound) to the single European currency (Euro) on January 1st, 2008.

Informing journalists about the governments actions less than a year before the adoption of the Euro by Cyprus, Sarris said that the value of the Cyprus pound will be locked to the Euro on July 10th, 2007.

He also said that the Ministry will continue giving social benefits in 2007 but said that this policy will be followed in the framework of the states economic capabilities.
