  • [01] SPOKESMAN - JULY 8 AGREEMENT

Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis reiterated on Thursday the Greek Cypriot side`s adherence to the July 8th agreement, saying that for us and for the UN, this procedure constitutes the sole way leading to a mutually acceptable solution, through substantive negotiations.

The Spokesman was invited to comment on a letter by Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat addressed to the UN Secretary General, containing the Turkish side`s positions on the current phase of the Cyprus problem and especially with regard to the July 8 agreement.

Any other solution to the Cyprus problem, which tends to change the agreed, is not only a retreat, but also a regression, because, instead of promoting the effort for a solution, it only promotes deadlocks and ineffectiveness, he said.

Pashiardis noted that the government of Cyprus is evaluating the positions of the Turkish Cypriot side as expressed in Talat`s letter, stressing that the Greek Cypriot side remains committed to the July 8 agreement.

We remain committed to the July agreement and the achievement of a functional and viable solution the soonest possible. This goal is neither promoted nor served with retreat from the agreed or with regression to dead-end roads, he pointed out.

Asked whether the Turkish Cypriot side was proposing a procedure similar to the one that was followed before the Annan plan was put to referenda, the Spokesman said that he would not reveal the content of Talats letter to the UN.

The July 8 agreement is valid, as long as the two sides have the wish to implement it. Our side aims at implementing in full the agreement, without any preconditions, Pashiardis added.

He noted that any delay regarding the implementation of the agreement does not necessarily mean that the agreement is not valid.

The agreement does not need any review. This agreement is very clear. The only thing needed is the mutual good will to promote the implementation of the agreement. Our side has the necessary political will, the Spokesman said.

    [02] CYPRUS - EUROZONE

Cypriot Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris said on Thursday that the Ministry is continuing its efforts for the best possible transition of the Cypriot national currency (the Cyprus pound) to the single European currency (Euro) on January 1st, 2008.

Informing journalists about the governments actions less than a year before the adoption of the Euro by Cyprus, Sarris said that the value of the Cyprus pound will be locked to the Euro on July 10th, 2007.

He also said that the Ministry will continue giving social benefits in 2007 but said that this policy will be followed in the framework of the states economic capabilities.

    [03] SPOKESMAN - KUWAIT

Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said on Thursday that it would be an unpleasant development if the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus opened a commercial office in Kuwait but underlined that this development does not necessarily give the pseudostate any legality.

If, in the end, the pseudostate intends to open up a commercial office in Kuwait, this would of course be an unpleasant development. But surely, this does not mean giving any legality to the illegal pseudostate, Pashiardis said, answering questions during his daily briefing.

He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus is already making all necessary representations concerning the issue.

    [04] DAVIS CUP - CYPRUS
