  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - GREEK PREMIER - MEETING

Cyprus as every sovereign state can exercise its rights according to international law, Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has said referring to Cyprus` intention to explore and exploit possible hydrocarbon deposits off its coast, noting that Turkey`s reactions should concern the European Union, in which Turkey aspires to join.

Karamanlis held talks on Wednesday with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, who stressed that oil exploration and exploitation constitute a right of Cyprus according to international law, adding that Turkey ``provocative actions`` should be considered by the international community.

Apart from the issue of hydrocarbons, Karamanlis and Papadopoulos discussed the Cyprus problem and efforts to implement the 8 July 2006 agreement, as well as the next moves of the two countries in the EU.

Referring to the July 8 agreement, which envisages process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem, Karamanlis said that the agreement has not yet been implemented due to the delaying tactics employed by the other side, adding that Greece and Cyprus insist on the implementation of those agreed.

``We remain focused on a comprehensive and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions and the European values and principles, so that the last dividing wall (in Europe) would fall and the benefits of the EU would extend to the whole of the island,`` the Greek Premier noted, expressing hope that ``Turkey will show the necessary political will so that the whole process will quickly move forward.``

Regarding Turkey`s European course, Karamanlis reiterated that Cyprus and Greece wish to see Turkey to adopt EU principles, adding however that ``we cannot ascertain progress where there is none``.

``It is up to Turkey to fulfill the commitments it assumed if it wants to proceed towards the EU,`` he added.

Replying to questions regarding the way forward on an European Commission regulation envisaging direct trade between the EU and the Turkish Cypriot community, both Karamanlis and Papadopoulos said that they support a regulation that would promote the reunification of Cyprus.

``Cyprus works very seriously so that both aims of the regulation would be achieved and namely to assist the Turkish Cypriots financially and to seek their economic integration which would assist the unification of the Republic of Cyprus,`` Papadopoulos said.

    [02] GREEK ARCHBISHOP - CYPRUS

Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Christodoulos will be visiting Cyprus from April 30 to May 6.

Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II said on Wednesday that the programme of the visit is being prepared and that someone would be travelling to Athens next week so that Archbishop Christodoulos could take a look and suggest changes.

    [03] LIMASSOL - VULTURES

Efforts are underway on the island to boost the local vulture stocks, as their numbers are dangerously dwindling.

Limassol Mayor Andreas Christou handed over a vulture egg to Forestry Department officials, saying that the municipality attaches great significance to this effort.

This was the fourth time Limassol Municipality has provided the Forestry Department with vulture eggs to breed the species, which is under the threat of extinction.
