  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - GREEK PREMIER - MEETING

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis stressed on Wednesday that the Republic of Cyprus, as every sovereign state, may exercise its rights according to international law.

Referring to Cyprus` intention to explore and exploit possible hydrocarbon deposits off its coast and speaking after a meeting in Athens with Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, Karamanlis said Turkey`s reactions to this prospect also concern the European Union because Turkey is bound by good neighbourly relations.

Replying to questions, President Papadopoulos said it was not necessary for Cyprus and Greece to sign an agreement for the delimitation of their exclusive economic zones, due to the very good level of relations between them.

``Our relations are to such a degree of cooperation that such an agreement, which might create other implications, is not necessary,`` he said.

Karamanlis and Papadopoulos discussed the Cyprus problem and efforts to implement the 8 July 2006 agreement, the next moves of the two countries in the EU and the issue of hydrocarbons.

President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed on 8 July 2006, during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of senior UN official Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
