His reference on two countries is of course a slip of the tongue and not a deliberately made remark, Pashiardes said, adding that Cyprus Permanent Representation to the UN asked for immediate correction.

The UN website corrected the remark and now it refers to two communities and not two countries, he said.

Pashiardes underlined UNSGs reference on the importance of the implementation of the July 8th 2006 agreement between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus during a meeting in Nicosia in the presence of UN Undersecretary General for political affairs Ibrahim Gambari, to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day to day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

Regarding Ban Ki moons statement that he would encourage the two leaders to ensure the implementation of this agreement, the Spokesman said that our side does not need encouragement on this``.

We are already determined to work and cooperate with the UN and the Turkish Cypriot side for the full implementation of the agreement and we prove our determination in deeds, he pointed out.

Asked why the UNSG has not spoken on the necessity that the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities meet, he said that the reason for this is that the reference he made on the July 8th agreement provides when and under what circumstances such a meeting could take place.

Asked whether the government is concerned over the UNSGs expression of regret that his predecessors plan for a Cyprus solution (Annan plan) was rejected by the Greek Cypriots, he said our side as well expresses its regret, since we were not given the chance to accept a good settlement plan that would provide for a functional and viable solution.

The Republic of Cyprus became an EU member state in 2004. Cyprus is divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

Invited to comment a statement by EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn that the return of the fenced of town of Famagusta (occupied since 1974 by the Turkish army) is not linked with the discussions on the Commissions direct trade regulation between the Turkish Cypriots and the EU countries, but is rather part of the overall solution of the Cyprus problem, the Spokesman said that Rehns position is in conflict with our position.

We have not retreated from our position regarding the Famagusta issue. The opening of the Famagusta port is directly linked with the return of the occupied town to its lawful citizens, he said.

[03] SUPREME COURT - MARFIN POPULAR BANK

The Supreme Court, in its temporary decree, said that the CySec had no jurisdiction to judge that MPB is guilty of violating regulation 21 of the CySE and to impose a fine of 10,000 Cyprus pounds (one pound trades at 2.2 dollars), a move that falls within the jurisdiction of the CySE.
