  • [01] CYPRUS: LOCAL ELECTIONS - VOTING ENDED

Voting in todays Municipal elections ended at 1800 local time (1600 GMT) and the counting of the votes is expected to begin at local election centres.

A total of 505,172 Greek and Turkish Cypriots and European nationals living in Cyprus were registered to vote to elect the mayors of 27 municipalities, 23 in the government-controlled areas and four in the areas occupied by Turkish troops since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The mayors of the other six municipalities (Morphou, Kythrea, Lysi, Lefkoniko, Karavas and Kato Polemidia) have been elected unopposed.

Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savides said he expects that the new mayors will be announced around 22:00 local time (2000 GMT).

According to Savides, this was the first time that a total of 309 Turkish Cypriot registered voters cast their ballot paper in a joint electoral role with the Greek Cypriots.

For the first time, 3,728 voters (mainly British and Greeks) participated in the local elections, two years after Cyprus` accession to the European Union.

Polls opened at 0700 and closed at 1800 local time with one hour break between 1200 and 1300.
