  • [01] PAPADOPOULOS - TURKEY - EU

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said on Sunday that the government would be making every effort on all levels and with all the means it has at its disposal to convince its European partners on its positions regarding the Cyprus problem, so that changes are made to the recommendations of the European Commission on the fulfillment of Turkey`s obligations towards the European Union.

He added that no country believes that suspending Turkey`s EU accession negotiations would either help the Cyprus problem or the long-term or short-term interests of Cyprus.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport before departing for China, President Papadopoulos said it would be a ``grave mistake with irreversible consequences`` for the Republic of Cyprus to accept to link Turkey`s EU progress with progress on the Cyprus problem, adding that this would make ``Cyprus a hostage of Turkey, which would have an excellent excuse not to fulfill its obligations`` towards the EU.

Replying to questions, President Papadopoulos said ``all countries believe that Turkey is not meeting its obligations towards the EU, which include its obligations towards Cyprus, and that some kind of pressure should be exerted to oblige Turkey to fulfill its obligations.``

Referring to the European Commission`s recommendations, President Papadopoulos said ``other states do not believe they are satisfactory and we certainly do not consider them satisfactory.``

    [02] PRESIDENT - CHINA

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has arrived in China on a four-day official visit.

In statements before departure, the President of the Republic said that relations between Cyprus and China have traditionally been excellent and he expressed certainty that his visit will help strengthen even further these ties.

The President is accompanied by the Ministers of Finance, Michael Sarris, Trade, Industry and Tourism Antonis Michaelides, Cypriot President to China Petros Kestoras, government officials and by a delegation of Cypriot businesspeople.

    [03] HOUSE PRESIDENT - ROMANIA

President of the Cypriot House of Representatives Demetris Christofias, on an official visit to Romania, will hold a meeting this afternoon with Romanian Speaker of the Senate Nicolae Vacaroiu. Later on, Christofias will meet with Romanian Minister of Industry and Commerce Codrut Seres and the head of the Romanian Orthodox Church Patriarch Teoctist.

Tomorrow he will be meeting Romanian President Traian Basescu and Deputy Prime Minister Marco Bella as well as the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Bogdan Olteanu. Later in the afternoon there will be a meeting with a delegation of the Cyprus Romania Chamber of Commerce.

    [04] ST. NICHOLAS - EXHIBITION

An exhibition titled ``Saint Nicholas, masterpieces of art in East and West``, with seven icons from Cyprus, will be opened on Wednesday in Bari, Italy.

The exhibition, which is under the auspices of the Italian President, is organised by Bari Municipality, Apulia District, Bari University, the Antiquities Office of Bari and Foggia, the Archbishopric of Bari and the metropolitan church of Saint Nicholas of Bari.

Saint Nicholas, who in Italy is steadfastly linked to the town of Bari due to the presence of his remains there, is an outstanding form, especially dear to the cultural and artistic history of the Mediterranean and the whole of Europe.

Cyprus is participating in the exhibition with seven icons from the 13th century to the late 16th century. Five of the icons are from the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation and the other two from the Morphou Metropolis.
