Answering questions on Ankara`s ties with Brussels, in view of the Commissions progress report on Turkey`s accession course, President Papadopoulos said that the situation will be very difficult.

Yes, very intense contradictions are predicted but we are taking measures by enlightening and informing our EU partners and others and we are hoping that everything will go well, the President added.

Cyprus, which joined the EU in May 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Turkey, a country aspiring to become an EU member state, does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus and refuses to implement the EU-Turkey Customs Union Protocol, by opening its ports and airports to Cyprus.

[02] NATIONAL GUARD NIKIFOROS 2006

Nikiforos is a large-scale manoeuvre, directed by the General Command of the National Guard. Formations and all groups of the National Guard participate in the manouevres as well as a large number of reservists and militiamen.

[03] CYPRIOT FM - SLOVAKIA

Lillikas will be received on Friday by Slovakias president Ivan Gasparovic.

The Cypriot FM will meet his Slovak counterpart Jan Kubis and talks will follow between delegations from both countries which will examine Turkeys relatiïns with the EU, the future of Europe and other issues of mutual interest.
