Prime Minister of Denmark Anders Fogh Rasmussen arrives in Cyprus on September 4 on a two-day official visit, during which he will hold talks with President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.

According to the programme of the visit, Rasmussen will be welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas at Larnaca airport and will then depart for Nicosia. Later on he will attend a private dinner hosted by President Papadopoulos at the latter`s residence.

On September 5 an official welcoming ceremony will be held at the Presidential Palace. Rasmussen will then proceed to inspect a Guard of Honour and lay a wreath at the statue of the late President of the Republic of Cyprus Archbishop Makarios III. President Papadopoulos and Rasmussen will have a brief meeting, followed by talks.

    [02] CYPRUS - GREECE - BASKETBALL

Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis has expressed the congratulations of the government for the victory of the Greek national basketball team over the US team in the Mundobasket semifinals in Japan.

He also expressed the government`s wishes for a victory in the final game on Sunday.

``I would like on behalf of the President of the Republic and the government to welcome today`s triumphant victory of the Greek national basketball team and convey to the coach and players of the national team our warmest congratulations and wishes for the conquest of the final trophy,`` Pashiardis said. The Greek team beat 101-95 the US team in the semi-finals and will play in the final against the winner of the Argentina - Spain game.

[03] CENTRAL BANK - RISE IN INTEREST RATES

Cyprus Central Bank has raised its basic interest rates by 0.25% in a bit to curb rising inflation, which reached 3.22% this July compared to June 3.02%.

After the decision by the Monetarty Policy Committee, the Lombard rate and Overnight Lending Facility are 4.50% and 2.50% respectively, while the main refinancing operations (repo rate) is at 4.50%.

``The Committee has noted with concern the rise of inflation at 3.22% in July compared to 3.02% recorded in June. The inflation pressures intensified from the high oil prices, as well as the acceleration noted in the money and credit offered to the private sector, a large part of which is aiming at consumer expenditures,`` Central Bank Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou said announcing the Committee`s decision.
