    More than 35,000 foreign nationals arrived in Cyprus since the Israeli assault on Lebanon began, while 23,000 of them have already departed via air for other destinations.

    Police spokesman Demetris Demetriou told CNA that until 0600 this morning, a total of 35,023 people arrived in Cyprus via air or sea and until 0700 today, 23,000 left Cyprus for other destinations.

    The majority of the evacuees are US citizens, French, Swedish, British, Canadians and Australians.

    Cyprus Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou told CNA that the Cypriot authorities have reached their limit in facilitating the evacuees from war-ravaged Lebanon.

    ``The aid from European Union member-states is not the one we expected so far,`` Thrasou said, adding that EU Environment Commissioner, Stavros Demas, will be traveling to Cyprus tomorrow to assess the whole situation.

    [02] US SECRETARY OF STATE - CYPRUS - ISRAEL

    US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stopped over in Cyprus on her way to Lebanon and Israel for talks with Lebanese, Israeli and Palestinian leaders on the Middle East crisis.

    ``It is very important to establish conditions under which a ceasefire can take place. We believe that a ceasefire is urgent,`` Rice said during her flight to the Middle East. ``It is important to have onditions that will make it also sustainable,`` she told reporters.

    Rice is set to meet Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora. She will fly on to Israel for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during her trip, before discussing the Lebanon crisis with European and Arab officials in Rome on Wednesday.

    [03] UN RELIEF COORDINATOR - LEBANON - ISRAEL

    Jan Egeland, the U.N. emergency relief coordinator, said on Monday he will launch from Beirut an international appeal for urgent humanitarian assistance for the next tree months on behalf of the whole UN system and several partner humanitarian organizations.

    Tonight he is due to arrive in Cyprus, from where he will fly on tomorrow to Israel to discuss ways with Israeli officials to carry humanitarian aid to blocked areas in Lbanon.

    [04] CYPRIOT DOCTORS - LEBANON

    The Cypriot team of Doctors of the World is currently in Lebanon, carrying four tones of medical and pharmaceutical aid, to be handed over to hospitals in southern Lebanon.

    Surgeon Eleni Theocharous told CNA said that as soon as the team arrive in Sidon, she will start conducting surgeries on children. The Cypriot team also comprises Dr. George Demetriou (paediatrician) and Andreas Vasiliou (administrator).
