  • [01] FRENCH DEFENCE MINISTER PAPADOPOULOS

French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, carried a message from President Jacques Chirac to his Cypriot counterpart Tassos Papadopoulos, expressing his gratitude to the government and the people of Cyprus for assisting all EU citizens at this time of need since the Israeli bombing of Lebanon began on 12 July.

Alliot-Marie already conveyed the French governments message to Papadopoulos during a meeting the two had at the Presidents holiday home at the coastal northern resort of Protaras.

She told Papadopoulos that she is carrying a personal message from Chirac, thanking the President, the government and people of Cyprus for the mobility and willingness exhibited during the large wave of refugees from Lebanon.

    [02] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT - APPEAL - L/CA PORT

President Tassos Papadopoulos called on the EU to help Cyprus in handling the influx of foreign nationals fleeing Lebanon.

Speaking during a visit to Larnaca Port, President Papadopoulos appealed for planes and coordination to transfer the foreign nationals back to their homelands.

He said Cyprus is an EU border, therefore the problem is European. So far, President Papadopoulos said, only Finland has responded to a demand for more countries to open their borders.

    [03] EGELAND LEBANON APPEAL

Jan Egeland, the U.N. emergency relief coordinator, said on Monday he will launch from Beirut an international appeal for urgent humanitarian assistance for the next 3 months on behalf of the whole UN system and several partner humanitarian organizations.

In statements at Larnaca Airport where he stopped before departing for Beirut, Egeland said the Lebanon war is not a natural disaster but a senseless war which should never have started.

In his statements, Egeland said he is on a mission on behalf of Secretary General Kofi Anan to go to Beirut, and hopefully southern Lebanon to assist the humanitarian aid and more importantly asses what the UN can do to improve conditions and to come to the relief of Lebanese people in the hour of greatest need.
