Papadopoulos, speaking to the press after the 20 minute long meeting, said the SG repeated that the latest visit to Cyprus of Sir Kieran Prendergast was not a one off mission and said that efforts on Cyprus would continue. With regard to the absence of an agreement in Brussels on a counter-statement to Turkey's unilateral declaration that it does not recognise Cyprus, Papadopoulos said the sooner an agreement is reached on the EU statement, the better for everybody. On the position of Turkish premier about a solution of two states in Cyprus, Papadopoulos said this was no solution and an unacceptable position. ''We talked about the Cyprus issue and reviewed recent developments in Turkey's accession course, as these relate to EU efforts to issue a statement to counter a unilateral declaration by Ankara that it does not recognise Cyprus,'' the minister told CNA, responding to questions after his meetings. He also said Ankara has no intention of making any concession whatever prior to October 3, when accession negotiations with the European Union are set to start. Speaking at a press conference here, he said he discussed the Annan plan (a UN solution plan) with Papadopoulos, during an encounter at a reception, which both leaders attended. [07] Cyprus National Council to meet Friday1340:CYPPRESS:07Cyprus National Council to meet Friday Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus National Council, top advisory body to President Tassos Papadopoulos on the handling of the Cyprus question, will convene here Friday, 23 September. Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told CNA that the meeting will begin at 1000 local time (0700 GMT). The Council, comprising all parliamentary parties, is expected to be briefed by Papadopoulos on the meetings he is currently holding in New York on the sidelines of the 60th UN General Assembly. The Cypriot President had a meeting Friday with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan during which they discussed the Cyprus question and other issues. The National Council will convene in the light of efforts by the EU 25 member states to come to an agreement as regards a European Union counterstatement that will respond to Ankara's unilateral declaration that its signature adapting the Ankara Agreement, to extend to all ten new EU member states including Cyprus, does not signify recognition of the Republic of Cyprus. Addressing the conference, Cyprus Minister of Interior Andreas Christou noted that amongst the government's priorities is to take fully advantage of the EU Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund. He noted that Cyprus' geographic position in the eastern border of the Union, as well as its distance from the center of the Union, creates disadvantages in the area of transfer and transport, like the transfer of goods to and from the rest EU countries, adding that for this reason the Cypriot economy is faced with additional problems in the area of competition.
