    US: Congressional staff visit to occupied Cyprus not illegal

    Nicosia, Aug 9 (CNA) -- US State Department spokesman Adam Ereli has said there was nothing illegal about using Tymbou airport in Turkish occupied Cyprus, adding that ''US government personnel are certainly legally eligible to fly to Ercan (Tymbou) airport.''

    Responding to questions about a visit by Congressional staffers to occupied Cyprus, Ereli said ''we consider the visit as an unofficial staff delegation wanting to go to Northern Cyprus and that it's perfectly appropriate for them to do so if they want.''

    Nicosia, Aug 9 (CNA) -- The number of road accidents in Cyprus reported to the police decreased to 3.284 in 2004 compared to 3.777 in 2003 and human casualties in road accidents were 117 persons killed and 3.176 persons injured in 2004, as against 97 dead and 3.411 injured in 2003, the annual report «Transport Statistics» for the year 2004 says.

    The report also says that during 2004, 4.297 vessels arrived at the various ports of Cyprus compared to 4.375 in 2003. Of these 3.357 or 78,1% arrived at Limassol port, 712 or 16,6% called at Larnaca port and 228 ships at other ports.

    Cyprus President sends condolences for Robin Cook

    Nicosia, 9 Aug (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos, has sent to British Prime Minister Tony Blair a message of condolences for the sudden death of Robin Cook, noting that the late politician was particularly respected in Cyprus as ''an outspoken advocate for a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem''.

    In his message, Papadopoulos expresses sincere condolences on behalf of the Government of Cyprus, and his deepest sympathy to Cook's family.

    EU commissioner urges UN to push ahead with Cyprus talks

    Nicosia, Aug 9 (CNA) -- EU enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn has called on the United Nations to push ahead with Cyprus talks to reach a comprehensive settlement of the island's long-standing political problem.

    According to AFP, in a speech delivered in Hamburg, Rehn also stressed the importance of Ankara's recognition of Cyprus, adding that he was ''reasonably confident'' that EU Turkey accession talks would start as scheduled on October 3.

    Al Assad underlines Syria's support for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Aug 9 (CNA) -- Syrian President Bashar Al Assad reassured that his country would continue to support the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

    Receiving the credentials of new Ambassador of Cyprus to Syria, Efstathios Orphanides, the Syrian President also underlined that the close and friendly cooperation between his country and Cyprus could expand to various aspects, adding that the exchange of visits between officials from both countries should continue.

    According to an official press release, the Syrian President conveyed an invitation to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos to visit Syria, stressing that his country ''would continue to support efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem''.
