Speaking to reporters on Sunday after a memorial service for two Greek Cypriots brutally murdered by Turks in August 1996, during anti-occupation demonstrations, Iacovou said the government has been aware of the issue and has reacted at different levels. The State Department is keeping a distance. The spokesman was critical of Turkey and its military, occupying the northern part of the island since 1974, for their unwillingness to follow suit, in line with their obligations emanating from the Ottawa Convention. President Papadopoulos also noted that if a social meeting between himself and Talat takes place it will not be a major step towards the settlement of the Cyprus problem, adding that social encounters are important for the creation of a better climate, but do not have a political meaning. Chrysostomides noted ''there is no information about any official political presence by members of the Congress'' at the US delegation.
