    Cyprus Central Bank calls competition for euro coins

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Central Bank has called a competition for the selection of the national sides of euro circulation coins, which will be issued with the introduction of the euro in Cyprus.

    A Central Bank press release said proposals for the three thematic designs should be submitted, each of which will constitute the national side of each group of denominations of euro coins, small denominations: 1 cent, 2 cent, 5 cent, middle denominations: 10 cent, 20 cent, 50 cent and high denominations: 1, 2.

    Three design themes have been chosen to reflect the special character of Cyprus in the sphere of culture, nature and the sea. The three design themes are: Culture: Idle from Pomos Nature: The Mouflon and Sea: The Ship of Kyrenia.

    Regime prevents Commissioner from meeting Turkish Cypriots

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said here today that it seems that the occupation regime in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus is preventing Cypriot Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou to hold contacts with Turkish Cypriot parties and their leaderships.

    Replying to questions, Chrysostomides said that ''this is an issue which must be examined by the EU and I am sure that it will express a clear disappointment for these manoeuvrings.''

    Cypriot Government congratulates Anorthosis

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has expressed the government's warm congratulations to Anorthosis, the team of Turkish occupied Famagusta, for its 3-1 victory over Turkish Trabzonspor in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

    Chrysostomides said he was pleased for the sportsmanship during the match, which took place in the government controlled areas of the Republic and was attended by fans from both sides of the island, ''Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, something that reflects the high level of our country's ethos.''

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said there must be a clear signing of the additional protocol by Turkey without any actions that will annul the importance of its signature.

    Asked if the government has any information on the issue of the signing of the protocol, Chrysostomides said ''the information we have is that Turkey has announced many times that it will sign the protocol,'' adding that ''the protocol has not been yet signed.''

    London, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said his meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair was excellent, adding that they decided on ways to promote bilateral cooperation and dialogue.

    In his speech during an event organised by the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) in London, President Papadopoulos noted the importance of dialogue in order for the British government ''to understand our positions and us to support them in issues of common interest.''

    Cypriot government sees fresh start in relations with Britain

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said there is a new beginning in relations between Britain and Cyprus and described yesterday's meetings in London between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos on one hand, and British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou on the other hand, as very satisfying.

    ''There is a new beginning in the relations between Great Britain and Cyprus,'' he said, adding that ''the agreement for a structured dialogue is especially important, in order to have a constant direct communication to ascertain the positions of both sides leaving no room for rumours.''

    Spokesman says Turkey must not contradict Protocol substance

    Nicosia, Jul 27 (CNA) - Turkey is obliged to sign the Protocol expanding the Ankara Agreement to cover the European Union's ten new member states, including the Republic of Cyprus, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said, stressing that any other action by Turkey apart from the signing should not contradict and retract the substance and the significance of the Protocol.

    In comments to CNA about statements made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan after a meeting with his British counterpart and EU council President Tony Blair in London, Chrysostomides noted that what is essential right now is the clear signing of the Protocol ''with whatever that entails''.

    In statements in London, Erdogan noted that Turkey would not recognise the Republic of Cyprus prior to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) - The medieval castle of Pafos, in western Cyprus, is preparing to welcome Guiseppe Verdis La Traviata from September 2 to 4, to be performed by the National Opera of Poland, within the framework of the Pafos Aphrodite Festival (PAF).

    Addressing a press conference yesterday, Minister of Education and Culture Pefkios Georgiades noted the role PAF plays in promoting musical education on the island, as well as its contribution to the development of the island as an important cultural destination.

    Blair says protocol does not involve recognition of Cyprus

    London, Jul 27 (CNA) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair has said today that the signing of the Ankara Protocol by Turkey extending its customs union to the ten new EU member states, including the Republic of Cyprus, does not involve the recognition of Cyprus.

    Blair was speaking after a meeting at 10 Downing Street with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who stated that there is no difference in Turkey's approach to the issue of recognition of the Republic of Cyprus.
