    COREPER decides on signature of protocol procedure by Turkey

    Brussels, Jul 26 (CNA) -- EU member states Permanent Representatives agreed Monday by consensus on the procedure to be followed with regard to the signature by Turkey of the protocol extending its customs union to the ten new EU member states, including the Republic of Cyprus.

    The EU British Presidency convened yesterday's COREPER meeting with a view to determine this procedure.

    Washington, Jul 26 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice held a 40-minute meeting yesterday, during which Iacovou presented the Greek Cypriot side's positions on the Cyprus problem and pointed out that it has cooperated with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan towards a Cyprus settlement.

    Speaking after his meetings at the State Department, where he signed a Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) on the prevention of the spread of weapons of mass destruction, Iacovou said he noted that the Greek Cypriot side's positions on the solution plan proposed by Annan have been expressed and that the Secretary General should continue his efforts, either by sending an envoy to the island or by appointing a special representative to be in Nicosia.

    Washington, Jul 26 (CNA) - US State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack has said that the US continues ''to actively support the UN Secretary General's approach toward a permanent solution on Cyprus.''

    In his press briefing on Monday, McCormack noted that ''Secretary General Annan has urged the Cypriot President, Papadopoulos, to present his views to the UN and resume progress on a way forward, and we stand ready to assist all sides in that task.''

    Cypriot President meets UK relatives of missing persons

    London, Jul 26 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos met in London last night with a delegation from the UK Committee of Relatives of Missing Persons, to discuss the issue of missing persons in Cyprus and recent developments in the matter, which indicate that the process of determining the fate of missing persons could be accelerated after an apparent shift in the Turkish side's stance, as a result of pressure exerted by relatives of Turkish Cypriot missing persons.

    The President briefed the delegation on the Greek Cypriot side's efforts to solve the issue, noting that this was one of the first matters he brings up during talks with the UN Secretary General, heads of state and other international community dignitaries.

    PSI to facilitate US-Cyprus cooperation

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) - The Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) Ship Boarding Agreement, signed yesterday in Washington between Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, will facilitate cooperation between the two countries to prevent the maritime transfer of proliferation-related shipments by establishing points of contact and procedures to expedite requests to board and search suspect vessels in international waters.

    The State Department, in a press release, notes that Cyprus is the world's sixth largest ship registry by gross tonnage and the first EU member state to sign such an agreement with the US, adding that ''signing the ship boarding agreement demonstrates the commitment of Cyprus and the US to ensuring the highest standards of security for their flag registries.''

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Namik Tan has said that Turkey was against any social, cultural, sports or political activity with the Republic of Cyprus, which it does not recognise.

    In a statement to CNA, Tan confirmed reports that Ankara opposed today's football match in Nicosia between Greek Cypriot team Anorthosis and Turkish team Trabzonspor, because the Turkish football players entered Cyprus via Larnaca International Airport.

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Namik Tan has told CNA that a protocol extending Turkey's customs union with the ten new European Union members, including Cyprus, may be signed towards the end of this week.

    Invited by CNA to comment on reports that Turkey will sign the protocol Wednesday, Tan said ''it may be during this week but I dont think it is going to be on Wednesday.''

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has no specific information that Turkey is to sign a European Union protocol extending its customs union with the ten new member states, including Cyprus, Government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told CNA today.

    He noted that the protocol has not yet been signed and underlined that the position of the government remains the same, that the signing of the protocol constitutes an obligation of Turkey towards the EU.

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus Justice and Public Order Minister Doros Theodorou has said all necessary security measures have been taken for tonight's football match between Greek Cypriot team Anorthosis and Turkish team Trabzonspor.

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) Acting President of the Republic and House President Demetris Christofias has expressed satisfaction over tonights match between Cypriot soccer club Anorthosis and Turkish Trabzonspor, that will take place in the government controlled areas.

    He said for the first time a Turkish soccer team ''is carrying out its sports obligations in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.''

    Nicosia, Jul 26 (CNA) The Republic of Cyprus is trying to persuade the US and Great Britain that a solution to the Cyprus problem must be found by Cypriots themselves, said here Tuesday Acting President and President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias.

    The Cypriot politician made the remark not to colleagues but to a group of children of the diaspora, from the US and Australia, aged 12-15.

    Cyprus & Britain discuss ways towards the island's unity

    London, Jul 26 (CNA) British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos discussed today ways to achieve progress towards the unity of Cyprus.

    In his opening remarks at the end of their meeting at 10 Downing Street, Premier Blair said the two discussed the EU agenda. He also said they turned their attention specifically on how it is possible to have progress towards the unity of Cyprus.

    President Papadopoulos in his opening statement referred to the traditional good relations between the two countries.
