    British MP says Turkey must withdraw troops from Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) -- North London Conservative MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has said that ''if Turkey wants to be in the EU then it must remedy its human rights record and it must withdraw its troops from Cyprus.''

    Speaking at the 16 July annual rally in London's Trafalgar Square, organised by the National Federation of Cypriots in Great Britain to commemorate the 31st anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Villiers said that last October, Turkey promised to extend its customs agreement with the EU to cover all new member states, noting that ''it is vitally important that they do this because it will mean that they recognise the government of Cyprus.''

    ''They still haven't done this. Unless they do so before 3 October, Tony Blair must block the opening of accession negotiations,'' she added, according to a press release issued by her office.

    Egyptian Minister: Cyprus has chance to find oil and natural gas

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) -- Cyprus has a very good chance to find oil and natural gas, Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Amin Sameh Samir Fahmy said here today, reassuring that his country would assist Cyprus in its efforts to utilize its reserves.

    ''Cyprus has very good chance to find oil and gas and we are not going to end this cooperation unless we make sure that Cyprus enjoys really the utilization of gas and oil from Cyprus off shore or on shore facilities'', Egyptian Minister stressed, after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on energy matters, with his Cypriot counterpart Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Giorgos Lillikas.

    Egyptian Minister, who is paying Cyprus an official visit, was received later on by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos. He also had a meeting with President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias, who expressed his gratitude to the government of Egypt ''for the long support and solidarity towards the Cyprus people for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem''.

    Cyprus confident about Russia's positions

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the position of the Russian Federation on the Cyprus problem is based on principles and the respect of lawfulness, noting that he did not see any change in policy on behalf of Russia.

    Commenting on a statement reportedly made by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the necessity to lift the ''isolation'' of Turkish Cypriots, after a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Chrysostomides said ''the position of the Russian Federation is known.''

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA) -- Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that the presence of foreign delegations in the Turkish occupied areas of the island to attend events to mark the 31st anniversary of the Turkish invasion, concerns and greatly disturbs the Cypriot government, noting that in the case of ''official'' delegations, representations will be made.

    US promotes Cyprus reunification, Bush says

    Nicosia, Jul 19 (CNA)-- US President George Bush stressed today that his country promotes the reunification of Cyprus and is encouraging both sides on the island and the United Nations to create the appropriate conditions for the recommencement of a productive dialogue that will lead to a permanent and comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    Bush's remarks were made during a short tete-a-tete meeting he had with Cypriot opposition right-wing party (DISI) leader Nicos Anastasiades at the sidelines of a round table discussion of the leaders of the International Democratic Union, hosted by the US President in the White House.

    Larnaca, Jul 19 (CNA) Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has expressed certainty today that the Russian Federations policy on Cyprus will not change, adding that the policy was fully explained during the Russian Foreign Ministers visit to Cyprus.

    Commenting on a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the necessity to lift the ''isolation'' of Turkish Cypriots, after a meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Iacovou said after Putins statements, we held contacts at a very high level and I have absolutely no qualms.
