Lord Hannay: Cyprus solution depends on Turkey - EU relations

London, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Britains former special representative on Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, believes that the solution of the Cyprus problem depends on the evolution of Turkeys application for accession to the European Union.

Speaking at a presentation of his book'' Cyprus The Search for a Solution'', Lord Hannay expressed the opinion that if the Turkish EU application is rejected, then there will be no settlement of the Cyprus issue.

Keravnos: Cyprus is the 9th largest ship registry worldwide

Limassol, Jun 25 (CNA) --- Shipping in Cyprus exhibits a strong dynamism, which is reflected in the fact that Cyprus is the 9th largest ship registry and one of the largest third-party shipmanagement centres in the world, Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos said, today addressing the 2005 International Association of Maritime Economists Conference, in the southern coastal town of Limassol.

''With respect to shipping, in particular, the expected signing and implementation of the Customs Union between the EU and Turkey would inevitably lead to the lifting of the Turkish embargo in the use of Turkish ports by ships under the Cypriot flag or ships managed in Cyprus, thus increasing the attractiveness of Cyprus as an international shipping and transit trade centre'', he noted.
