    Cyprus: ''Paradoxy'' among primary neat contributors to EU budget, says Minister

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said the fact that Cyprus is among the primary neat contributors to the EU budget consists a ''paradoxy'' of the EU financial perspectives 2007-2013.

    Speaking yesterday at the EU Foreign Ministers Conclave in Luxembourg, Iacovou said that Cyprus financial contribution to the EU budget, according to the structure of its economy, is very high taking into consideration its financial potentials and expressed hope and expectation that Cyprus' special circumstances will be recognised ''so to be treated justly, especially in the framework of the Cohesion Policy and not be a neat contributor.''

    EU approves Turkey's customs union additional protocol

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- The European Union approved an agreement on Monday adapting its customs union with Turkey to the 10 new EU member states, including Cyprus, bringing accession talks with Ankara a big step closer, a diplomat said, according to Reuters.

    EU foreign ministers meeting today in Luxembourg endorsed the protocol without discussion, sending it to Turkey for signature. Ankara's top EU negotiator Ali Babacan, has said Turkey will sign it as soon as it receives the document.

    OPCW workshop in Cyprus on Chemical Weapons Convention

    Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) organises in Nicosia a three - day workshop (June 13 - 15) on the Chemical Weapons Convention which has already been signed by the Republic of Cyprus.

    General Director of the Organisation Rogelio Pfirter, who is currently on the island to address the workshop, met today with Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Christos Taliadoros.

    Cyprus hosts International Bar Association Conference

    Limassol, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus has acceded to a great number of multilateral international conventions, promoting the legal cooperation beyond its boarders and has concluded bilateral conventions with neighbouring countries and not only, Cyprus Minister of the Interior Andreas Christou has said.

    He was addressing, on behalf of Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, a European Forum Conference of the International Bar Association opened here today under the title ''The New Europe-Legal challenges of Integration''.

    Cypriot FM pleased with protocol approval

    Brussels, Jun 13 (CNA) Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou expressed satisfaction today for the approval by his European Union counterparts of a protocol to Turkeys customs union agreement with the Union, which would adapt the Ankara Agreement extending it to all ten new members, including Cyprus.

    The protocol will now be signed by the EU Council of Ministers and the Turkish government, something which, Iacovou has said, is expected to take place next week and in any case before 30th June when the EU Luxembourg presidency ends.
