Papadopoulos: not easy to make corrective moves on EU Constitution

Larnaca, Jun 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos believes that it would not be easy to rectify certain things with regard to the European Constitution, in particular because several member states have already ratified it.

Speaking on departure for Luxembourgh for a meeting with Premier Jean Claude Junker, to prepare the forthcoming EU Council, he said it would be difficult to reengage these member states in a fresh round of negotiations.

He explained that the ratification of the Constitution and its rejection by the French and the Dutch people is a matter of grave concern within the EU.

Russian envoy: talks initiative must come from Cyprus parties

    By Katerina Nicolaou

Nicosia, Jun 3 (CNA) -- Russian Foreign Ministry Special Representative on Cyprus Leonid Abramov believes that an initiative for the resumption of a Cyprus dialogue must come from the interested parties, adding that previous failures have increased the responsibility of all players involved in this long standing political problem.

In an interview with CNA, Abramov reiterated the Russian commitment to a comprehensive and viable Cyprus settlement and to the principle that the UN Security Council has the main role in the process towards a solution. Referring to Turkey's European perspective, he said that it creates a new environment for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

''We intend to contribute in multiple ways to the effort to create favourable conditions for the promotion of a solution, within the framework of the UN Security Council and through our contacts with representatives of the communities in Cyprus and other interested parties'', Abramov said.

Cyprus President dismisses Turkish reports as ''imaginary''

Larnaca, Jun 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has dismissed as ''imaginary'' Turkish press reports suggesting that he had put forward such proposals for the resumption of negotiations that led the Turkish Cypriot leader to reject them.

Speaking on departure for Luxembourgh for a meeting with Prime Minister Jean Claude Junker, he called on Mehmet Ali Talat to clarify whether he wants a solution through acceptance of a UN proposed plan (the Annan plan) which the Greek Cypriots rejected in their overwhelming majority in a referendum last year.

On fresh moves to resume negotiations, Papadopoulos said the UN are determined to offer their good services, meaning make every effort to bring the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides back to the negotiating table, to facilitate, put forward proposals but without acting as arbitrators.

''The press reports on what I am supposed to have proposed to the UN are not fully correct, they contain many inaccuracies and one wonders whether such reports have a specific objective, to preempt the climate or to create conflict among the Turkish Cypriots and those who want a solution,'' he said.

UN diplomat discusses Cyprus with Greek government officials

    by Christa Nicolaou

Athens, Jun 3 (CNA) -- The only way to have a solution to the Cyprus problem is to find a formula and a package of proposals that can be accepted by both sides and that is the objective, UN Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast said here after a meeting with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Petros Molyviatis, Deputy Minister Yiannis Valinakis and General Secretary George Yennimatas.

Sir Kieran reiterated that the aim of his tour to Nicosia, Athens and Ankara is to get the feel and the pulse, adding that ''the pulse is beating.''

''This is part of an exercise of going and talking to all the parties to get a better idea of where they stand,'' the UN diplomat said, adding that ''Greece is extremely supportive of the process.''
