    Cyprus FM in Ramallah today to hold talks with Palestinian Authority

    Ramallah, May 17 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minster for Foreign Affairs George Iacovou will meet later today leaders of the Palestinian Authority to discuss, among other issues, the Middle East peace process and a Cypriot-proposed aid programme for Gaza.

    Iacovou left Jerusalem today for Ramallah to meet Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Ahmad Qurei and Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council Rawhi Fatooh.

    Cyprus more involved in ME peace process after EU accession, says FM

    Ramallah, May 17 (CNA) Cyprus, since accession to the European Union, is a lot more engaged in the Middle East peace process, Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou stated here Tuesday.

    Speaking to Arab, Palestinian and foreign media in Ramallah after meeting Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei, Iacovou said that ''Cyprus has over the years very close relations with the Palestinian people and their leadership.''

    ''Since our accession to the EU we are more involved in the peace process in the Middle East and we are ready to help in any way we can the Palestinian people to fulfill their national aspirations,'' he added.

    Warsaw, May 17 (CNA) -- The third session of the Third Summit of the Council of Europe began this morning in Warsaw, with the participation of heads of state and government of the 46 member states, as well as five observers and three organisations with a special guest status.

    Cyprus, a member state itself, is represented by President Tassos Papadopoulos, who will be addressing the Summit later on.

    Cyprus donates 30,000 US dollars to Guinea

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) Cyprus will donate 30,000 US dollars to Guinea in aid of the victims of recent floods in the country, the Cabinet has decided.

    The government of Guinea had declared a state of emergency following the floods and appealed to the international community for assistance.

    Warsaw, May 17 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said today that the parties involved in the Cyprus problem should contribute towards the restoration of human rights on the island, noting that he would spare no effort in striving through negotiations to truly and effectively reunify the country, its people, society, territory, economy and institutions.

    Addressing the Third Summit of the Council of Europe, taking place in Warsaw, President Papadopoulos pointed out the importance of executing all decisions of the European Court of Human Rights in an immediate and courageous manner, noting that failure to do so would undermine the achievements of the past 50 years and put at risk the very foundations of European human rights protection.''

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) The objective of the Greek Cypriot side is the right preparation of a new negotiations process, with a view to secure its success, Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has said.

    Replying to questions as regards the meeting between Cyprus Presidents envoy to the UN Ambassador Tasos Tzionis with UN Under Secretary General for political affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast at the UN headquarters in New York, Chrysostomides said the meeting focused on procedural matters.

    Cypriot Education Minister at Bergen for Mid-term Bologna review

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) Ministers responsible for higher education in 40 European countries, including Cyprus Minister of Education and Culture Pefkios Georghiades meet in Bergen to take stock of the progress of the Bologna Process.

    The aim of the Bologna process is to create a common European Education Area within 2010. During the Summit to be held 19-20 May in Bergen, halfway to the headline goal, Ministers will meet with representatives from the EU Commission and other relevant actors to discuss the Bologna progress.

    Cypriot FM holds meetings in Ramallah

    Ramallah, May 17 (CNA)-- Cypriot Foreign Minister George Iacovou met today in Ramallah with Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Ahmad Qurei and the presidency of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

    Diplomatic sources told CNA that Iacovou noted at the meetings that after Cyprus accession to the EU, the island is more in the position to contribute to the promotion of a solution in the Middle East problem.

    The same sources added that Iacovou also expressed Cyprus' readiness to help Palestinians create the infrastructure in various areas and to contribute by training policemen and public administrators or by cooperating with them in the health sector, especially by building medical centres in the Palestinian territory as soon as the Gaza disengagement plan is concluded, most probably this Autumn.

    Iacovou also briefed them on the current situation in Cyprus regarding the political problem and underlined that there must be vigilance Turkish manoeuvres in the Islamic Conference Organisation.

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Michael Savory will be visiting Cyprus May 21 - 24.

    According to press release issued by the British High Commission in Nicosia, Savory will be hosted by the mayor of Nicosia Michalakis Zambelas and will have meetings with the President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, House President Demitris Christofias and representatives of the business community, including the Cyprus Stock Exchange.

    ''The Lord Mayor's visit aims to further develop the strong economic and trade links between the UK and Cyprus'', the press release concludes.

    European Constitutional Courts conference opens in Cyprus

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) The legal practitioners are responsible for the protection of the principles and the people's rights from interventions of the state power or any other power aiming to limit them beyond constitutional limits, Cyprus House President, Acting President of the Republic Demitris Christofias has said.

    In his speech at the official opening of the XIII Conference of the European Constitutional Courts, the topic of which is ''The Criteria of Limitation of Human Rights in the Practice of Constitutional Justice'', Christofias added that in our days the judiciary authority is called to function within a new European Democratic space, named space of Ğliberty, security and justiceğ.

    Welcoming the jurists from the various European countries, Attorney-General of the Republic Petros Clerides noted the significant role of the judges in determining the extent of the limitations of human rights in a modern democratic society.
