Brussels, Mar 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has expressed the belief that Turkey will finally sign the protocol extending its customs union with the 10 new EU member-states, including the Republic of Cyprus.

Reiterating Nicosia's position that Turkey has the obligation to sign the protocol, Papadopoulos stressed that Turkey must sign the protocol before October 3, 2005, when Turkey is set to start accession negotiations with the European Union.

Turkey must sign customs union protocol, says Cyprus President

Brussels, Mar 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed here today that Cyprus demands that Turkey signs and implements a protocol to its customs union agreement with the European Union, extending it to all ten new members including Cyprus, before 3 October 2005, when accession negotiations between the Union and Turkey are set to begin.

Larnaca, Mar 23 (CNA) -- Cypriot House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias returned home today after official meetings in Australia.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport upon his return, Christofias said all his interlocutors noted their ''respect towards the democratic decision of the Cypriot people during last year's referenda.''
