    United Nations, Sep 21 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Government has announced that the annual military exercise ''Nikiforos'', scheduled for October 19-25, will not take place.

    US government notifies Congress of transfer of US arms to Cyprus

    Washington, Sep 21 (CNA) -- US State Department Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli has said the US notified last week the US Congress ''of the government of Greece's unauthorized transfer of US-sold defence articles to Cyprus'', noting that ''this notification is required by US law.''

    Replying to questions regarding US arms deployed in Cyprus, Ereli said Washington is not aware of any recent case in which Turkey, that occupies Cyprus' northern areas since 1974, appears to have violated the terms of the licence on US arms sales to Ankara.

    Turkey's troops pose a problem, not National Guard, says Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 21 (CNA) Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has questioned US thinking that the meager National Guard (the Republic's armed forces) araments are considered by Washington a problem.

    He also wondered why the US does not appear to consider the presence of well-armed Turkish occupation troops in the Republic's northern areas a problem as well.
