    Liturgy in Turkish-occupied church

    Morphou, Sep 2 (CNA) -- For the first time since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus hundreds of Greek Cypriots, led by the Bishop of Morphou, attend on Thursday morning a church service, at the holy church of Agios Mamas, in the northwest of the island.

    Bishop Neofytos, accompanied by about 15 clergymen, is praying and singing hymns to celebrate the name day of the saint, in a somber atmosphere befitting the occasion.

    In another development, on Wednesday evening a Turkish Cypriot platform fighting for the reunification of Cyprus, ''This land is ours'', organised a rally in Morphou to press on with its demand for a political settlement.

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, said that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots must be able to find a political settlement, without outside pressure.

    In an interview with CNN-Turk, Putin also said Russia would work with everybody, including Turkey, to help reach a solution, adding that both Moscow and Ankara wish to see that happen.

    ''The two communities must be able to reach a settlement through establishing an accord between themselves. People must be able to live in peace for many years,'' he said.

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 3/9/2004 to 4/9/2004 ------------------------------------------- Mainly fine with some local cloud during the day. On Saturday afternoon local clouds may bring isolated showers, especially over mountain areas.

    Wind will be light to gentle variable breezes in the morning gradually becoming southwesterly to northwesterly moderate to fresh sea breezes in the afternoon. In the evening light to gentle breezes will prevail, mainly from northwestern to northeastern directions.

    The temperature will be maximum daytime around 35C inland, 31C over the the east and south coast, 29C over the west and north coast and around 25C over the mountains. Minimum temperature will be around 20C inland, 21C over the coast and 16C over the mountains.

    The sea state will be smooth to slight in the evening and early morning gradually becoming slight and reaching up to moderate in some widnward coastal areas, mainly southern areas, in the afternoon.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 5/9/2004 to 6/9/2004 ----------------------------------------------------- Mainly fine with probability of isolated showers in the afternoon, especially over mountain areas.

    Temperatures will decrease slightly.

    Cyprus government expects experts' conclusions on UNFICYP

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- The UN experts that evaluate the situation on the island and the role of the United Nations peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) continue their contacts with both sides on the island, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, adding that the Government is waiting for their conclusions.

    Chrysostomides noted that the government hopes that the demining procedure will begin soon, according to the Cyprus government's proposal.

    Cyprus FM expresses abhorrence for double bomb attack in Israel

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its strong abhorrence for the double bomb attack against two busses in the central street of town Beersheba of Israel that cost the lives of a number of innocent civilians.

    In a written statement, the Ministry expressed ''the deep sympathy and sincere condolences of the Cyprus Government and people to the relatives of the victims, to the Government and the people of Israel.''

    It also reiterated ''the strong opposition of the Cyprus Government to any form of terrorism, irrespective of motives, which it unequivocally condemns.''

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- The National Guard (Cyprus army) is preparing to hold the Nikiforos annual military manoeuvre, announced today Defence Minister Kyriacos Mavronicolas.

    Invited to comment on the issue, the Defence Minister said that the decision whether Nikiforos will be held or not is taken jointly by the governments of Cyprus and Greece, based on the general political conditions and developments.

    European Court to rule on property commission in 2-3 months

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) -- The European Court of Human Rights said that within the next two to three months it would issue its decision on a Turkish proposal to have a property commission, in Turkish occupied Cyprus, recognized as a legal tool to deal effectively with property claims by Greek Cypriots.

    The case was heard by the ten-member Third Section of the Court, sitting in Strasbourg, and during the three hour long hearing, the President of the Section and another two judges addressed questions to Turkey's representative on the matter.

    The Court will also decide on whether the case in question is admissible and will be heard.

    Overseas Cypriots underline positions on Cyprus in resolutions

    Nicosia, Sep 2 (CNA) Overseas Cypriots outlined their views on a solution to the Cyprus problem, stressing that it must be based on UN Security Council resolutions, the acquis communautaire, international law and human rights.

    The resolutions, adopted during the 20th annual meeting of the Central Councils of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) held in Cyprus, are addressed to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, President-designate of the European Commission Jose Manual Durao Barroso, US President George Bush and the prime ministers of Australia and the UK, John Howard and Tony Blair respectively.

    Nicosia, Sept 2 (CNA) -- Russia is committed to a negotiated peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem, which has to be accepted by the population of the island, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov who is paying an official visit to Cyprus.

    Speaking to the press after a meeting with Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Fedotov said his country's position on the Cyprus problem remains unchanged and that Russia will contribute in the UN Security Council to a solution ''which should be fair, just and lead to a real resolution of this long standing problem.''

    Brussels, Sep 2 (CNA) The discussion on the European Commission regulations for financial assistance to Turkish Cypriots and direct trade with the occupied areas did not yield any result today during the meeting in the Committee of Permanent Representatives, referred to as COREPER.

    Following the development, the Dutch presidency said COREPER will discuss the issue again on 9 September, four days before the meeting of the General Affairs Council.

    At the same time, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said he doubted any EU regulation could will be ready for approval during the Council meeting of the General Affairs and External Relations 13-14 September, citing lack of time

    Larnaca, Sep 2 (CNA) Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said the Republic has dispatched Attorney-General Solon Nikitas to Strasbourg for todays hearing at the European Court of Human Rights on a Turkish proposal to have a property commission, in the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus, recognized as a legal tool to deal effectively with property claims by Greek Cypriots.

    Iacovou said just like in previous cases, the Republic of Cyprus felt that serious national issues are being discussed at the European Court of Human Rights and for this reason it wanted the voice of the government of the Republic of Cyprus to be heard.
