Cypriot political party leaders and foreign diplomats serving in Cyprus have announced their decision to attend the religious rites. The church has been in the limelight in the recent weeks in both sides of the divide following the decision by Morphou Bishop Neophytos to conduct religious rites at the occupied church and especially after last week's bomb attack at the entrance of the church which caused serious damage to the building. The government of Cyprus has asked the UN peacekeeping force on the island (UNFICYP) to evaluate the Greek Cypriot pilgrims conditions of safety during their trip to the Turkish-occupied town of Morphou and inform the government whether it can guarantee their security. Morphou Municipality and Morphou Bishop have called upon all to attend the evening service as well as tomorrow's holy ceremony on the Saint's day and pray to God and to the Patron Saint of Morphou, so that the way is soon paved for reunification of Cyprus. In the occupied areas, self-styled premier Mehmet Ali Talat supported the move while Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash opposed it, noting that the reopening of the church signals the return of Greek Cypriots to the occupied areas. The occupation authorities have taken strict security measures following last weeks bomb attack against the church. Bishop of Morphou Neofytos, who initiated the idea to reoperate the church, received a heros welcome by the Greek Cypriot pilgrims as he arrived at the church around 1830 local time (1530 GMT) and shortly after began the service in the packed church. Earlier, the icon of St. Mamas was carried in procession outside the church for pilgrims to worship. Tonights service, is carried live by Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and transmitted through the Hellas Sat satellite programme for overseas Cypriots. The pilgrims began their journey early in the afternoon, traveling in their vehicles or busses that were specially arranged by the organisers. The occupation authorities took unprecedented security measures, following last Fridays bomb attack of the church which has been in the limelight in the recent weeks in both sides of the divide following Bishop Neophytoss decision to conduct religious rites at the occupied church on 1 and 2 September to celebrate the Saints name day. The so-called policemen used metal detectors during their inspections while a strong police presence guarded the churchs surroundings. A helicopter hovered around the church, while fire brigade vehicles were on alert outside the church. Turkish flags as well as flags of the illegal regime were hoisted at a mosque which is only 50 metres away from the church, and which was scheduled to operate simultaneously with the Agios Mamas church, in protest against the Greek Cypriots religious rites. A peace gathering will be held at Morphou square later this evening by the Turkish Cypriot platform This country is ours, which Greek Cypriots will also address.
