Cyprus government expresses deep regret at murder of T/C teenager

Nicosia, Jul 13 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government expressed deep regret and repulsion at the brutal murder of a Turkish Cypriot 13-year-old boy in the southern coastal town of Limassol by a 29-year-old Greek Cypriot, thought to be under the influence of drugs at the time.

According to Assistant Chief Police Operations Sotiris Charalambous, the young boy was stabbed to death by a 29-year-old Greek Cypriot man from the Turkish occupied village of Yalousa, at 1700 local time (1400 GMT) at the old Limassol port pier. Police arrested the man as he was trying to escape.

Charalambous said Salih Mehmet Ozhovarda, who lived in the former Turkish Cypriot quarter of Limassol, had multiple stab wounds on his body and he succumbed despite efforts at Limassol General hospital to save him.

The Police officer said the Greek Cypriot is well known to the police for suffering mental problems and being a drug user and will be examined by a psychiatrist.

There are indications which lead us to believe the suspect was under the influence of drugs, said Charalambous.

Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides, in a written statement, expressed the governments deep regret and repulsion at the brutal crime in Limassol today which led to the death of our your Turkish Cypriot compatriot.

He said the Greek Cypriot had a heavy criminal history, noting we unreservedly condemn such criminal acts.

Expressing the governments deepest condolences to the boys family, Chrysostomides said it is clear that there were no political motives behind the crime.

Justice and Public Order Minister Doros Theodorou said the state will be ruthless against such criminal and inhuman attitudes, whether they are due to sick tendencies, schizophrenia or any other reasons.

In a written statement, he said the Cyprus government will not allow the undermining of the pure relations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on which the future of our people is being built on.

He said he had given instructions to police to bring the suspect immediately before justice.
