[02] FM underscores unacceptable demand1450:CYPPRESS:02FM underscores unacceptable demand Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said that the demand by the Turkish Cypriot illegal regime on visitors to the occupied areas to show their passports was right from the start illegal and continues to be regarded as such. He said there was no further information about moves by the regime to lift this demand and pointed out that the European Union believes that all European citizens should be treated equally. The regime announced on Friday it would lift this demand, then retracted saying this requirement would apply only to Greek Cypriots whereas citizens of other EU member states would be allowed to cross into the occupied north without showing their passport, using an ID only. ''The self-styled regime in occupied Cyprus is an illegal entity and operates outside law and order. The EU believes that the demand to show passports is unacceptable,'' Iacovou added. Commenting on the same issue Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said that the government aimed to find methods to unify economic activity and not strengthen separation. He also said that the whole issue of displaying or not passports by the Greek Cypriots proved that Mehmet Ali Talat, so-called prime minister of the regime, showed lack of honesty, weakness to confront those forces that wished to maintain the current division and an attempt to exploit the benefits Cyprus gained from accession to the EU.
