    Papadopoulos in touch with Karamanlis on US trip

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos was in touch with Greek Premier Kostas Karamanlis before the latter left for the US where he is set to discuss the question of Cyprus with US President George Bush, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today.

    The spokesman said Karamanlis would brief Papadopoulos about the outcome of his contacts in New York with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Washington.

    Cyprus' former FM in Morocco and Tunis

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) Moroccos Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa has expressed understanding over the Greek Cypriots decision to reject a UN-proposed solution plan in last month's referendum.

    He also responded positively to a request by Cyprus for the Islamic Conference not to proceed with the recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

    Spokesman: no divisive tactics with regard to economy

    Nicosia, May 18 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides believes that direct or indirect recognition of the self-styled Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus is not possible because of international law which needs to be adhered to and of UN and European Union decisions.

    The spokesman stressed the government did not want to consolidate division with the Turkish Cypriots but on the contrary it wanted a unifying policy that would help the economy develop further.

    Cyprus House President: referendum outcome is start of renewed effort

    Strasbourg, May 18 -- The will of the people of Cyprus, as expressed in the outcome of last month's referendum on a UN plan for a solution, should be fully respected by the international community, President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias said here today.

    Addressing a meeting of parliamentary speakers from the 45 member-states of the Council of Europe, he also said that the result of the referendum should not be used to exert unwarranted outside pressure nor should it be seen as a tool to engage in hasty policies that cannot serve the purpose of promoting the long-sought settlement of the Cyprus problem.

    Cyprus was represented by Foreign Minister George Iacovou, who outlined the government's position on the special majority with regard to taxation, on EU foreign and security policy, judicial cooperation and other pending issues.

    Strasbourg, May 18 (CNA) -- The question of Cyprus and future prospects for a political settlement was the focus of a meeting here between Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias and General Secretary of the Council of Europe (CoE) Walter Schwimmer.

    Speaking after the meeting, Christofias said he had a good and creative discussions during which they talked about a demand by certain circles for the participation of self-styled Turkish Cypriot deputies in Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council.
