    Finish Marcus Gronholm wins Cyprus Rally

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) -- Finland's Marcus Gronholm and Timo Rautiainen won the Cyprus Rally yesterday by 54 seconds and gave the Marlboro Peugeot Total team its first ever win with the Peugeot 307 on this fifth round of the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship. The 2001 World Rally Champion duly moved into the outright lead in the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers.

    Gronholm began Sunday's final six special stages with a 22.9 second advantage over Citroen's Sebasten Loeb and virtually doubled his lead over the opening 25 kms section between Vavatsinia and Mandra Kambiou. He beat the Frenchman by 17.5 seconds and continued to edge away over the first loop of stages to begin the final loop 42.6 seconds in front.

    Meanwhile at the Stewards meeting, after scrutineering of the Cyprus Rally 2004 the 5th round of the FIA World Rally Championship it was decided that a component on cars 5 and 6 and a component on cars 3 and 4 have to be checked against the series part.

    The check should be carried out on Wednesday 19th May 2004.

    Until then, the final official classification of the 2004 Cyprus Rally is to be considered subject to further technical checks by the FIA.

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Thursday 18/5/2004 to 19/5/2004 -------------------- On Tuesday, the weather will be mainly fine with some local cloud increasing in the afternoon causing a slight chance of isolated showers and/or thunderstorm mainly inland and over higher ground. The winds will be south to southwesterly, 3 to 4 BF and the state of sea will be slight.

    On Wednesday, will range from 10C to 25C inland, 13C to 24C over coastal areas and 8C to 17C over Troodos area.

    Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 20/5/2004 to 21/5/2004 ----------------------- On Thursday, the weather will be partly cloudy with some local showers and/or thunderstorm mainly inland and over higher ground.

    On Friday, the weather will be mainly fine with some local cloud.

    The temperature is expected to increase slightly.

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) - The Government of the Republic of Cyprus is the ''internationally recognised Government in Cyprus, with competence and authority to represent the State, notwithstanding the de-facto division of the island as a result of the 1974 Turkish invasion,'' the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in a statement, issued in response to a statement by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1st May 2004, titled Statement regarding the Membership of Cyprus to the EU.

    The Cypriot Ministry notes that ''the illegality of the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' has been consistently reaffirmed inter alia by the UN Security Council, the European Court of Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Communities.''

    President appoints new cabinet members

    Nicosia, May 17 (CNA) - President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos appointed three new Ministers today, namely Iacovos Keravnos as Minister of Finance, Christos Taliadoros as Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, and Charis Thrasou as Minister of Communications and Works.

    Announcing the President's decision, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said the new Ministers would give their assurances before the President tomorrow and would then take on their duties.
