    UN Secretary General: plan basis for negotiations

    United Nations, Feb 10 (CNA) -- Only hours before UN Secretary- General Kofi Annan is set to meet Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, he stressed that his peace proposal for a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus is on the table and is the basis for negotiations.

    Speaking to the press after briefing the Security Council on his moves with regard to Cyprus, Annan said that the UN would accept any changes the two sides bring about to his plan with mutual consent.

    Annan will have a joint meeting with Papadopoulos and Denktash at 1600 (New York time) and prior to that he is to see them separately for 15 minutes.

    United Nations, Feb 10 (CNA) -- The Security Council gave last night its full backing to Secretary-General Kofi Annan in his attempt to resume negotiations on Cyprus, having been briefed by Annan on his invitation to the parties concerned for a meeting here today.

    Speaking after the briefing, which lasted barely ten minutes, Council President, China's permanent representative Guangya Wang said the 15 members were briefed about the invitation to the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides.

    All Council members that took the floor expressed full support to the Secretary-General.

    Boucher: we urge Cyprus parties to negotiate seriously

    Washington, Feb 10 (CNA) -- The US urges the two sides in Cyprus to negotiate seriously during talks beginning today in New York under the auspices of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, according to the State Department.

    Answering to questions State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher also said Secretary of State Colin Powel is personally involved in trying to support the efforts and had phone calls with Annan and his European counterparts on the issue.

    Roger Briesch meets with Cyprus officials

    Nicosia, Feb 10 (CNA) --- President of the European Economic and Social Committee Roger Briesch held here today separate meetings with Acting President of the Republic of Cyprus Aristos Chrysostomou and Acting President of the House of Representatives Costas Papacostas.

    Chrysostomou told the press after the meeting that Briesch expressed the wish once Cyprus talks resume to have a fruitful and successful result.

    During the meeting, Chrysostomou and Briesch exchanged views on the Cyprus problem, on the Intergovernmental Conference for the Future of Europe, as well as on matters concerning Cyprus' participation to the European Economic and Social Committee.

    Briesch was expected to receive today by Cyprus Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Iacovos Keravnos, the names of the six Cypriot delegates at the Committee, who will represent Cypriot workers, employers, farmers and consumers' unions.

    Chrysostomou said after the meeting ''Briesch expressed the wish, once negotiations for Cyprus resume, to succeed and bring good results''.

    Acting Cyprus President added that the Greek Cypriot side is willing to cooperate on the basis of the Annan peace plan to reach a functional and viable solution.

    He expressed hope that the Turkish side will negotiate on the substance of the Cyprus problem, but noted that the statements made by Turkish high-ranking officials are discouraging.
