    Bush and Annan to discuss Cyprus issue

    Washington, New york, 3 Feb (CNA) -- US President George Bush will discuss here today the Cyprus problem, among other international issues, with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    The Cyprus question will also be discussed by the UN chief with US Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice.

    Meanhwile, State Department's Spokesman Richard Boucher said Powell ''spoke on Sunday with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan last week, on the subject of Cyprus''.

    ''So this is something that remains very important to us, to the Secretary as well, and something that we continue to work'', said Boucher adding that he expects the issue to come up again in the discussions with the UN SG who will be in Washington today for meetings.

    A UN spokesman said Monday in New York Annan will hold meetings at the White House, the State Department and the Congress on the Cyprus issue, the situation in Iraq and other issues that concern the international organisation.

    He added that the Secretary General will meet the Secretary of State at 1030 (local time), at 1200 the US President George Bush and at 1500 the National Security Advisor Contoleezza Rice. He will conclude his meeting with the leadership of the Republicans and the Democrats.

    Athens, Feb 3 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou discussed over a telephone conversation on Monday night the latest developments in the Cyprus problem with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    According to Greek Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Panagiotis Beglitis, Annan informed Papandreou on his recent meetings with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos in Brussels and Turkeys Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Davos.

    Beglitis said Papandreou assured Annan on the Greek Cypriot sides willingness to immediately resume negotiations on the Cyprus problem, based on the UN Secretary-Generals peace plan.

    Cowen: Irish EU presidency supports Cyprus effort by Annan

    Nicosia, 3 Feb (CNA) -- The Irish EU Presidency encourages all parties in Cyprus to meet the UN Secretary-General's requirements for the early resumption of negotiations to reach a settlement of Cyprus' longstanding political problem.

    He stressed that the solution of the Cyprus problem would enable a united Cyprus to become a full member of the EU, underlining that ''the only way to achieve this is on the basis of the proposals put forward by the UN Secretary-General - the Annan Plan''.

    Speaking at a press conference after talks yesterday in Dublin with his Cyprus counterpart George Iacovou, Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen welcomed the Greek Cypriot side's commitment to the resumption of talks, noting the EU presidency will support the Secretary-General fully in his role over the coming period.
