    Erdogan: an impartial country to help Cyprus

    New York, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed here Monday the involvement of an impartial country with the political weight to help resolve the issue, expressing the view that ''such a process, such an approach, will speed up the solution of the problem''.

    However, he said Ankara accepts the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-General and takes the Annan Plan for a Cyprus settlement as a reference.

    Nicosia, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Makis Keravnos has stressed that Cyprus is a strong supporter of a Permanent International Criminal Court with a jurisdiction over the crime of genocide.

    ''Having staunchly supported the establishment of a Permanent Criminal Court with jurisdiction over the crime of genocide in the hope that it will act as a decisive deterrent for such crimes, my government, is particularly pleased that this noble effort has been successful and is looking forward to the day when the Rome Statute will achieve universal membership'', Keravnos said in an intervention at the Stockholm International Forum 2004 on Prevention Genocide.

    Larnaca, Jan 27 (CNA) -- Turkey's ''political will'' for a Cyprus settlement remains to be proven in practice, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said here today on his departure for Strasbourg where he will address tomorrow the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

    He stressed that neither dilemmas nor demands were put in front of the Greek Cypriot or the Greek side.

    ECHR says judgment execution up to Committee of Ministers

    Strasbourg, Jan 27 (CNA) - The execution of European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judgments is the responsibility of the Committee of Ministers essentially and ''we would enter into conflicts if we were to attempt to provide an effective performance of all the judgments with the means available to the Court'', ECHR President Luzius Wildhaber said here today during a press conference.

    Asked if the ineffective execution of certain judgments, as in the Titina Loizidou case or the Cyprus interstate cases against Turkey, would result in other cases with similar violations, Wildhaber noted that ''the Turkish government has just announced that it is going to seek to renegotiate the entire situation'' in Cyprus and has paid in the Loizidou case, adding that ''there are still 650 other applications of the same nature that are pending before us and therefore we will have to decide to regard those as well''.

    PACE Committee approves amendments to Eorsi's report on Cyprus

    Strasbourg, Jan 27 (CNA) - The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Political Affairs Committee approved today by majority amendments by the Hungarian Rapporteur on the Situation on Cyprus Matyas Eorsi to his report, after his recent visit to the island, which will be discussed tomorrow at PACE after Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos addresses the Body.

    Present at the Committee's meeting were, apart from members of the Committee, representatives of Turkish Cypriot political parties, as is always the case when an issue concerning Cyprus is discussed.
