Cyprus' EU accession: decisive bend for solution, Juncker says

Larnaca, Jan 26 (CNA) -- The accession of Cyprus to the European Union should be turned into a decisive bend for the solution of the Cyprus question, Luxemburg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker has said.

Juncker arrived here yesterday for a three-day official visit. He holds today official talks with Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

Tuesday and Wednesday: 27/01/2004 to 28/01/2004 -------------------- Risk of isolated showers and snowfall over Troodos mountains on Tuesday morning, but the weather will soon become fair with patchy cloud. Winds will be southwesterly to Westerly moderate to fresh breezes, 4 to 5 BF. The sea state will be moderate and on the windward coasts up to rough.

The temperature will vary between 3 and 14 degrees inland, 7 and 16 over coastal areas and minus 2 and 4 degrees over mountains.

Outlook for Thursday and Friday: 29/01/2004 to 30/01/2004 ------------------------------ Fair weather on Thursday, but it will become cloudy by the evening with isolated showers.

On Friday night there will be a gradual improvement. The temperature will slightly icrease on Thursday, and decrease again on Friday.

Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean Claude Junker discussed here today recent developments in the Cyprus issue, as well as bilateral issues of common interest.

Delegations from the two countries, headed by President Papadopoulos and Premier Juncker, here on a three-day official visit, held official talks at the Presidential Palace for over an hour.

''We had an interesting meeting, during which we discussed recent developments in the Cyprus issue, as well as bilateral issues of common interest'', President Papadopolos said in statements after the meeting.

Cyprus asks UN for official information on Erdogan's stance

Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said that the government of Cyprus has asked the UN for an official information on statements and the stance of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan on the Cyprus issue, during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan last week in Davos, Switzerland.

President Papadopoulos said that the government of Cyprus is waiting for the official information by the UN as to what Erdogan has said and how the UN Secretary-General intends to act.

''We have some unofficial information from the UN but we are waiting for clarifications and an official statement. This becomes necessary because we heard several versions as to what Mr Erdogan has said'', Cyprus President said, in statements to the press after talks here with Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean Claude Juncker.

Nicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos reaffirmed today that the Greek Cypriot side is ready for talks to solve the Cyprus problem on the basis of the twice-revised solution plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, without terms or preconditions, so that a reunited Cyprus may join the EU as of May 1st.
