Hadjidemetriou says harmonisation must finish by March 15

Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) - Cyprus' Harmonisation Coordinator Takis Hadjidemetriou said today that the ministries' work to prepare the legislation remaining for harmonisation with the acquis communautaire should be concluded by March 15 so that the time until May 1, when the island will become a full member of the EU, could be used to pass the bills into law.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) - The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

On Tuesday (December 30) the weather will be fine with high clouds. However, on Wednesday (December 31) it will be locally partly cloudy with a probability of isolated showers. Winds will be moderate northeasterly to southeasterly and the state of sea will be moderate.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of around 17degrees centigrade inland and along the coast, and a minimum of 5 degrees inland and around 9 degrees along the coast.

On Thursday (January 1) and Friday (January 2) the weather will be partly cloudy with local showers. No significant change in temperature is expected.

Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) - The Cypriot government believes that Ankara is trying to water down negative impressions it has created within the international community due to its intransigent stance on the question of Cyprus.

Peace talks will be on the basis of UN plan, President stresses

Nicosia, Dec 29 (CNA) -- Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed that peace talks for a political settlement in Cyprus would take place on the basis of a proposal put forward by the UN Secretary General, as Kofi Annan has said.

''The position of the Secretary General is clear, talks should be conducted on the basis of his plan,'' the President said, invited to comment on press reports about a new proposal Ankara is working on.
