    Cyprus condemns suicide attacks in Israel

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly condemned the suicide attacks that took place September 9 in Israel.

    ''The government and the people of Cyprus would like to express their profound grief and extend their condolences to the families of the victims of these heinous terrorist attacks and to the government of Israel,'' the Ministry said in a press release.

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos pledged the governments ''firm and immutable aim to celebrate on May 1st 2004 the official accession of a re-united Cyprus to the European Union.

    He was speaking while receiving the credentials of Uruguays new Ambassador to Cyprus, Mario Alberto Voss Rubio who said that that although Cyprus is enduring political difficulties, it contrasts the pleasure of being a member of a potential unsuspected society such as the European Union.

    Finance Minister to attend Informal ECOFIN meeting

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus Finance Minister Markos Kyprianou left today for Stresa, Italy, to attend the Informal ECOFIN meeting of Ministers of Economy and Finance and the Governors of Central Banks between 12-13 September.

    The meeting aims at exchanging ideas and proposals on the main economic and financial issues concerning the Union. It will be presided over by Italian Minister for Economy and Finance Giulio Tremonti. Italy is the current EU President.

    It will be the first time that new member countries of the Union will be participating in a meeting of ministers and governors.

    Among the topics to be discussed are the trends in the economic situation and the preparation of the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund.

    Involvement in illegal elections problematic, says minister

    Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Giorgos Iakovou has warned against any involvement in December's illegal elections in Turkish occupied Cyprus, saying that any such move would boost the current status quo there which the UN has branded ''legally invalid.''

    ''These so-called parliamentary elections are illegal since thousands of Turkish settlers, brought to occupied Cyprus by Ankara, are participating,'' the minister told CNA, invited to comment on the possibility of having independent observers monitor the poll.

    ''Any observer mission to monitor these elections could offer support to the status quo of (Turkish Cypriot leader) Rauf Denktash,'' the minister added.
