    Greek FM shattered by Anna Lindh's death

    Nicosia Sep 11 (CNA) -- Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou expressed his condolences to the family of the Swedish Foreign Minister as well as to the people of Sweden for the sudden death of Anna Lindh, who died today in hospital a day after being stabbed by an unknown attacker.

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 12/09/2003 to 13/09/2003

    The weather on Friday will be mainly fine, but during afternoon local cloud may result in as isolated thunderstorm. The wind will be southwest to west moderate to fresh 4 to 5 bf, locally strong 6 bf and the state of sea moderate to rough. The temperature will reach 32 degrees inland, 30 degrees over the south and east coastal areas, 28 over the west and north coastal areas and 22 degrees over the mountains.

    On Saturday the weather will be mainly fine with some temporal cloud. The temperature is expected to note a fall, ranging inland from 18 to 31 degrees, over the coastal areas from 19 to 32 degrees and over the mountains from 14 to 22 degrees.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 14/09/2003 to 15/09/2003

    The weather will be mainly fine with some temporal cloud. The temperature is expected to note a rise.

    Cyprus extends condolences to Sweden

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) -- The Cyprus government has expressed deep condolences to the family of Anna Lindh, Swedish Foreign Minister, and to the people of Sweden.

    ''This is a sad day, the government wishes to extend its deep condolences to her family and to the people of Sweden,'' Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, after the official announcement of her death following yesterday's assassination attempt.

    Papandreou says Greece wants Turkish Cypriots in EU (1)

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) - Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Papandreou sent a message today to the Turkish Cypriots that the Greek side wants them to be part of the large European family and be active citizens of the EU.

    He also sent the message that the security of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots would be safeguarded by participation in the large European family rather than by occupation troops.

    Chisinau, Sep 11 (CNA)--Council of Europe Secretary General Walter Schwimmer said he is still optimistic about a solution to the Cyprus problem, stressing that whatever was behind the occupying regimes decision to partially lift the restrictions in the freedom of movement last April presents big advantages for a solution of the issue.

    Papandreou says Cyprus' EU accession creates new dynamic (2)

    Nicosia, Sep 11 (CNA) - The fact that Cyprus is a new member of the European Union has created new hopes, dynamics and self-confidence for the people of Cyprus, Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs George Papandreou said today, adding that Greece stands by a pledge to fight to see Turkish Cypriots becoming active members of this European family.

    Speaking at a press conference after wrapping up a series of meetings in Cyprus, Papandreou noted that Greece has also been very clear in saying that it will fight to see Turkey become a member of the EU but pointed out that to become a member, Turkey will have to follow specific rules and adopt specific values and practices.

    He said Turkey has made important steps on the Copenhagen criteria but noted that Turkey will have to deal with and answer to certain matters, amongst which are Cyprus and Greco-Turkish relations.
