    US to watch closely ''elections'' in occupied Cyprus, warns Weston

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) The United States' envoy on Cyprus has warned Ankara against any attempt to rig the vote in December's ''elections'' in Turkish-occupied Cyprus.

    As reported by AFP, special coordinator at the State Department Ambassador Weston said "elections" in northern Cyprus amounted to a referendum on EU membership and are ''far too important over whether or not there will be a Cyprus settlement.''

    Six billion pounds for reconstruction of occupied north

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) The estimated cost of reconstruction in the northern Turkish occupied part of Cyprus amounts to six billion Cyprus pounds, a ministerial committee, in charge of planning for the return of displaced persons to municipalities and communities currently under Turkish occupation after a political settlement, has said.

    The committee, comprising the ministers of Interior, Communications and Works, Finance and Education and Culture, had its first meeting yesterday and set the basic parameters for the work required.

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) Democratic Rally leader Nicos Anastasiades has made strong representations to the EU and the UN, denouncing a demand by the Turkish Cypriot occupation regime in occupied Cyprus to inspect passports of persons crossing into the occupied north.

    Preaccession Programme analyses Cyprus settlement aspects

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) - The Council of Ministers approved today the revised Preaccession Economic Programme, which includes an annex analysing the financial matters that may arise from a solution to the Cyprus problem, especially regarding a settlement based on a solution plan proposed to the two sides on the island by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

    Cabinet approves state budget for 2004

    Nicosia, Sep 9 (CNA) - The state budget for the year 2004 provides for total expenditure reaching 3.4 billion pounds and a total revenue of 2.8 billion pounds.

    The state budget was approved today by the Council of Ministers and will be forwarded to the House of Representatives.

    The cabinet also approved the Revised Preaccession Economic Programme, which will be sent to the EU within the week.

    Commission satisfied with Cyprus briefing on harmonisation process

    Brussels, Sep 9 (CNA) The European Commission seems satisfied with the briefing which EU Harmonisation Coordinator Takis Hadjidemetriou and the Cypriot delegation which is accompanying him in Brussels made regarding the islands progress in implementing the acquis communautaire.

    However, it is anticipating to see in practice the assurances given by the Cypriot delegation and especially the special session of the House of Representatives on 19 September where the necessary bills will be passed.
