    FM: UN resolutions highlight position on Famagusta

    Larnaca, Sep 3 (CNA) -- The position of the international community on a proposal by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to open for settlement by Greek Cypriots the fenced area of the occupied town of Famagusta (Varosha) under Turkish Cypriot administration is outlined in UN Security Council resolutions 550 and 789 and it will not change, Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou has said.

    Iacovou said that as long as Denktash remains on the political scene the possibilities for progress towards a solution in Cyprus are limited.

    US envoy meets EU officials to discuss Cyprus

    Brussels, Sep 3 (CNA) - US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston met today in Brussels with European Commission officials, in the context of a tour he began yesterday in London regarding the Cyprus problem.

    Speaking to reporters, Weston said confidence-building measures in Cyprus would not be considered a substitute to a comprehensive settlement, adding that Turkey should be doing more on the Cyprus issue if it wants to begin negotiations for accession to the EU.
