Nicosia, Jul 17 (CNA) - The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) can and must survive in the new competitive environment created by the island's accession to the EU, EAC's Board of Directors Chairman Giorgos Georgiades said today, noting that for this to occur the Authority must gain the autonomy, flexibility and ability to implement its development programmes without the current time consuming procedures.

Presenting EAC's 2002 results, Georgiades said ''it was a successful year for the Electricity Authority'', adding that exploitation income reached 202.4 million pounds, exploitation expenses 160.5 million, the net exploitation product 41.9 million, and taxation 4.6 million pounds.

Georgiades said the surplus for 2002 reached 11.8 million pounds, a figure smaller than last year's due to the transfer of 20 million pounds to the government's funds.

Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Yiorgos Lillikas said the government agreed with the utilisation of EAC's possibilities to increase its income and be in a position to survive future competition.
